I was looking into purchasing a new CPU and was wondering which one of these are the best. I heard AMD is better with gaming, so here they are:

1.) AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+ 2.60GHz / 2MB Cache / 2000MHz FSB /
Socket AM2/ Dual-Core / OEM Processor

2.) AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+(65W) Windsor 2.4GHz 2 x 512KB L2

3.) AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ / 1MB Cache / 2000MHz FSB / Socket 939 /
Dual-Core.

4.) AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+1MB L2 Cache Socket 939 Processor - OEM
4.0Ghz (2.0Ghz X 2)

I wouldn't say AMD is better for gaming. With the rapid release of new processors from both of the leading companies, I'd say both are balanced. It's a matter of pricing now.

There is an excellent article on page 62 of the June issue of Computer Pilot Magazine that supports my viewpoint that we should wait a few more months before investing a lot of money for new hardware.

"Perhaps you are a proud owner of a super duper brand new dual-core PC with a big NVidia or ATI graphics card in it, and you are still having major problems with all your sliders turned to (almost), maximum. Bummer".

The author goes on to state that we should wait until the DX10 Upgrade is ready. Wait until the third party vendors are upto speed. The DX10 patch is expected to be released in the Fall of 2007. 8) 8)

Naturally the fastest would be number 1 because of it's speed, but the Level 2 cache also makes a HUUUGE difference. 2 equally fast CPUs (with 1MB and 2MB cache respectively) will yield a BIG difference in performance.

I also remember from the FSX manual.... "AMD CPUs may perform worse than expected" or something to that effect. Have you considered a dual-core Intel CPU?

uh huh....I know what happens when my younger customers overclock their Hondas, I have a broken connecting rod and piston on the front counter to remind them. I imagine it's the same for computers. Remember folks, it's all about the system. Do your homework on compatibility, the fastest processor does NOT mean fastest processing of data. Even a moderate processor will blaze ahead of faster ones just for being installed on a workhorse of a motherboard. Also, familiarize yourself with the lingo and ask the engineers (it's okay, I still hate engineers) about what really matters to computational cycle time.

I just look at benchmarks, unless they are all false. hehe
