I've had the same problem. I get through the take-off, climbs, left and right turns to a compass setting and then "BAM" the instant I start into the 360 the instructor tells me to go back to the basics, lol. Give me a break. On a serious note though. . .it could be connected to holding proper altitude. As you turn, the engine torque will drop your nose. . .if you don't catch that you could begin a shallow descent and not realize it. If that happens the instructor could flunk you for being unable to maintain proper altitude.
Watch next time you try the final test. Better yet, flyoff somewhere where you won't hurt anyone, climb to a safe altitude, trim for level flight and start your turn and watch what the nose does. Watch the VSI and you will see what I mean. Master the turn and then go back and tell the instructor to "put a sock in it", lol. |

:?: Matt,
Not sure actually, but take a look back at what the entire scenario is supposed to be like. I think you take-off, climb to a prescribed altutude per the instructor and then make some turns from left to right and then back the other way to predetermined compass headings, then the 360 turn and finally proceed on to the airport for landing. I think if you pull up the GPS it may show your course setting. Try continuing on to the final destination and see if the instructor comes back on and sets you up for the approach and landing. I don't know that she will, but give it a try. . .maybe the 360 was so good she fell asleep for a bit.

Follow the PTS (Practical Test Standards) for Private Pilot. Availible on www.faa.gov.
It states, for private pilot, steep turns: 45 deg. +- 5 deg. Maintain entryspeed +- 10 knots, exit on the same course as you entered +-20 deg. Altitude +-200 feet from entryaltitude. You should be fine.
Regards,
John |
