Auto Landing with FS98 (not using 'X')

'lo all...

My Dad is trying to work FS98 after a few years of being away from it... and neither of us can remember how this thing works.

Using one of the Cessna 182 aircraft (the default), he can be randomly flying and when he presses the 'X' key, the instructor takes over and lands the aircraft at (what seems to be) the nearest airport/runway.

What Dad is remembering, though, is that he takes off from Miegs, heads roughly in the area of O'hare and then sets-up the NAV1 radio for the VOR at O'Hare (113.9) and the NAV2 radio for the 27R runway (110.5), sets the OBS heading for 270 and turns the AutoPilot on.

He then can't remember what he used to do... but it's something like he flies along for a bit.. seeing the VOR line moving closer and closer to centre, so we know the NAV settings are more-or-less Ok. He then remembers doing -something- ...and then the aircraft flies along and automatically turns onto the correct heading (along the 270 radial) and the aircraft flies itself down and onto the runway (more-or-less).

We've done some experimenting and it seems the "Land Me" ('X' key) doesn't follow VORs etc at all and the intructor will just land the aircraft any old way... but I haven't been able to find anything in the Help system, nor on the web about the scenario Dad describes.

I would appreciate any clues you might have, as dear old' Dad is going ga-ga trying to remember... and at 87, he has ENOUGH problems, without ol' FS98 making him crazy :)

Oz ........ there are plenty of us going ga ga much earlier than your Dad.... but dont worry, if he is still flying fs98, he's still young at heart.. :lol:

Not too sure of the answer here, but sit tight, and somone will jump in with the solution.

Well, we finally worked out how to do it... Here's one way:

- At Mieg's...
- select Lear jet (just does things quicker)
- AP (autopilot), ALT (altitude hold) and SPD (airspeed hold) all ON
- Set ALT (altitude) = 2500, IAS/MACH = 250 (vert. speed is pre-selected)
- nav radio ON and tuned to 110.50 (O'Hare 27R)
- 8 deg. flap (F7)
- brakes off (".")

Now, take-off...

- F3 and F4 to full power
- aircraft rotates itself at ~90 knots
- aircraft takes off
- after, say, 50 feet above ground, retract landing gear ("G")


The autopilot will take the aircraft up to 2500 feet and an airspeed of 250 kts... You could do this yourself but having the autopilot do it means you dont' have to think about these things - it's easy to overspeed with full power on...

When at 2500 feet/250 kts...

- F5 (remove all flaps)
- bank left to about 310 degrees heading

...and wait for a bit. The VOR/NAV will soon switch-in and you will see the ILS glideslope and VOR indicators moving. At this stage, click on the "APR" (approach) item in the autopilot... and the aircraft will turn itself onto the correct approach... and will vary the heading (maybe swinging left and right a bit) to line you up on the 27R runway.

Now you can disable the "ALT" and "SPD" items, put your gear down at the middle marker, apply flaps, etc, etc and land the aircraft yourself.

Now, to try and remember how to use the "NAV" button to intercept/run a radial...
