|

Who's the smartass in changing over from IDE cable HD's, to SATA HD's???
Because I can't find any IDE cabled HD's, I now have to change over my MB and get 1 more new HD that is SATA compatible.
My current MB had 2 connections for 2 SATA hard drives. That was fine, since my last rebuild, included a 500g and 250g SATA HD. But my C:\ windows was on an IDE hard drive.
And since I can't get another IDE HD, I was forced to get another SATA HD, for which, there is no connection for it, on the MB.
As well, when I replaced the 250g SATA with the new one, to install windows on, it won't recognize it. Said something about SCASM and something else about something else (brain dead right now trying to get it done).
I know SATA is faster and better than the old IDE cables, but jeez, does it have to be so complicated???
Otherwise, I've ordered a new MB with 4 SATA connections. I'll go from there, and rebuild......again. @^$#*@

This really, REALLY, sucks.
Because my bro had to add new drivers for the new MB, with all 3 HD's connected, my H,J and K partitions (H=All paint kits, software, etc, J= FS9, K=FSX and X-Plane) on the 250g HD, it shows it needs to be allocated. ( 8O ?????)
From what I understand, is everything I've gotten, made, painted, etc, is Ghandi, on the 250g HD. He thinks he can save everything if he puts it on his system, and copies it to DVD. But he isn't sure.
If I lose everthing, I will be lost. More than likely, I will be done with anything flightsim related. Reason being, I've got too much to redo, and start from the beginning again. And my heart right now, doesn't feel like doing it all over again. And to note, my FS9 was 53g in size as of July.
I'm really bummed right now, and I have no control of it.
Update and rant over.

Truly sorry to hear of your ongoing aggravations with your PC RD. I hope for the best recovery possible of all your work and all your 'play'....but if you think I believe you're done with all things flight sim related - I don't.
Not being flippant bud, and I honestly do know the way you're feeling right now ...with your equipment letting you down and so much possibly lost, but I know you pretty well after a few years now...and it's in your blood.
If I thought we'd seen the last RD repaint, or the last RD effect, or the last RD screenshot, I'd be more bummed than you are!
So vent your frustration, hit stuff, throw stuff, clench your teeth, scream a little, have a few deep sighs, and a few JD's....and then start over with all the FS stuff if you have to.
And if you have to, you have to.
Sucks...sure...and I'm not for an instant suggesting that FS is such a big deal in your life or anything - I know you're a well-rounded family man, professional, and respected veteran...but in my opinion you will also always be a passionate simmer.
GO RD! |

SATA is far faster than IDE.
Oh, and if you can't find IDE hard drives, you clearly have not looked well enough (well, okay, maybe they aren't sold at retail stores anymore).
BUT: http://www.newegg.com/ is a wonderful place for computer components, great prices too. Although, I will say, that a lot of their reviews come from people who don't know what they are talking about. |

BUT there is hope...
http://www.satasite.com/sata-ide-converter.htm or in case I have it backwards...
http://www.satasite.com/ide-to-sata-converter.htm
A simple part that may solve all your problems, maybe not the possible loss of data... But these will allow the hook up none the less.
I just ordered a new CPU and 2Gb of RAM to update my really out of date Dell last night from Newegg. The order has already shipped!

@ T-Fish, don't take this wrong...actually, take it as it is.
NO SH*T they are still available. But not from the local stores I shop at. Problem is, I wanted it fixed that day, not 2-3 days later. As well, I know they are faster and better..... I ALREADY SAID THAT. But thanks anyways.
@ Cat1... Thanks for the links. Don't know if my bro found or read these or not. He was able to get enough info, to download drivers so the system would recognize, and run windows. So right now, I do have windows XP Pro. But now it doesn't accept the other HD. It shows that it has files on it, but can't get to them, because it says something about it not being "allocated". Which I would assume means, it isn't formatted or partitioned. Hopefully your links will help him out. Thanks Clay.
@ Hark... Thanks man. But the future for now is gloomy as all can be. Am I done,....for good??? No, probably not. But, all my tools, pics, etc, being gone, is truly heart breaking. That's what sucks the most. Just one example, is the nose art girls, 297, that I had already edited and transformed into PSD format. All gone....WAAAAAAAAAAA.
I'll be back. And this time, I'll have all my major work saved to DVD, for insuruance, and peace of mind.
If you see this Colt, thanks for the call.
RD
PS: I'll let you all know when I'm back with the DT. Should be next week, I hope.
Note to self: Also save your work on your Super Rig. ](*,) ](*,) |

| can i be a stupid newb and get my head bitten off??? I once talked to BESTBUY about 2 old harddrives for a now dead and defunct laptop, and they said they had data recovery processes that they could do to get the info off of the drives, and install it to either a CD/DVD or to a new drive. Could that possibly be a possibility for you?? if not, just disreguard... im sure that the other suggestions are better anyways, just thought id be the dumb@$$ and offer. |

Actually, my bro is trying his hardest to recover and save the files. All I can do is hope he can. Or, leave it out of the OS, so I can take it to DIT. They also have what is required to retrieve and recover files.
Well see, as the week progresses, as to what we are going to do. But thanks for the advice............dumbass.....LOL. j/k

That process is a waste of money. |

| Why bring your computer to the store and have them charge you for something that you could have done yourself? |

Hey Fish,
I'm really biting my tongue on this one, so read it, and leave it alone
There are things I can, and can't do, and things I do and don't understand, as well as things I can cope with, and cannot.
This is out of my league. And with that, I have no problem spending the money to have a pro do, what I can't do, or do what I don't understand.
You can't make effects, but can do other great things with a PC. I on the other hand, can make effects, and am limited to what I can do with a PC.
It's my money, more than you can count. And if I can save weeks/months saving something, even at $200, it is money well spent, considering the time I have, to get everything that I have on that drive. Which if you paid me $20 an hour to get, would have realisticly, cost you over $10,000 for me to do, in my spare time.
Put that into perspective. I have over 4 yrs of stuff..... GONE.

| You know, I got to thinking about what you said when you mentioned that the drive as partitioned was not being recognized. It's possible that it was declared the "master" partition drive and without direct access you cant tell it to be a slave, which would correct the access error..............I do believe. Also, check the jumper on the back edge of the drive as IDE's declare master and slave by the shorting bar configuration as I recall. |
