I was flying a Cessna 172 Tuesday with a CFI.

I was "nicely reminded" several times to keep one hand on the throttle. He informed me that I should always keep one hand on the Throttle during departure and arrival. Unfortunately, I have been in the habbit of using both hands on my CH Products Yoke. However, Larry made it perfectly clear that one hand should always be on the Throttle. After we reached Cruise Altitude, I was allowed to rest my right hand on my right knee.

It is always great to be able to put some of the stuff that we learn on the Simulator into practice. Fortunately Larry is a friend of mine who made a great flying partner. 8) 8)

Very similar circumstances that my instructor told me, instinctivly I held the yoke with both hands, only to be told, use only the left, felt kinda strange, and took some getting use to, but within 30 minutes, it came quite easy........ and yes Skip, same thing applied to the throttles.

Interesting posts guys...having never flown anything in real life I find this sort of stuff neat to read.
I take it you don't want to be fumbling for the throttle if you need some 'instant power' upon emergencies when taking off or landing.

I was very pleased to read your response. I like to kid RD about this software being a Simulator vs a Game.

I am very fortunate to be a member of EAA and the Civil Air Patrol where I am given the opportunity to "learn" from real pilots.

To answer your question, you should always keep your hand on the throttle during takeoff just in case you experience engine problems and have ample runway left to stop.

You should always keep your hand on the throttle during approach/landing just in case you need to abort the landing and "Go Around". There is never any shame in aborting a landing which is not same. I lost a close friend from EAA about 9 months ago who was approaching on the wrong runway and at the last minute tried to switch to the correct runway. Joe and his parents were all killed in the accident. It hit me personally because I worked Ground Crew for Joe about a month before the accident when he volunteered to fly some young kids during one or our EAA Young Eagle events.

Likewise Dan.

Seriously though, I do have to admit, that every time I fly, my left hand is always on the throttle. I can't say as to why, but I always have. The only time it isn't, is when I need to hit a key on the keyboard.

Otherwise, the above reasoning would be correct. As well, when I'm flying fighters or stunt planes, you just have to have throttle control all the time.

It's funny how I've gotten so used to having a right hand on the stick, and my right thumb extending down to manipulate the throttle...completely unrealistic. I'm not particular towards a yoke setup, but would eventually enjoy at least having a good joystick on the right and a proper throttle unit on the left. (...and a screamer system with 6 LCD monitors in a half-circle array, but that's for another post. )

Larry taught me another thing which you may find to be helpful.

When you grab your Yoke with your left hand, stick your thumb up into the air and turn the Yoke to the right. Take a note of which way your thumb is pointing and take note of which way the corresponding aileron is pointing. 8) 8)
