One thing that I read, that I didn't know, that makes allot of sense...

A fresh reboot of your system will help recover memory, especially if your system has been on for a long period of time. Apperently a system that's running Windows 95/98 is prone to something called "Memory Leak".
Again, this is due to programs running in the background, doing what their ment to, logging, scanning, updating, and all the while, taking up more and more space in memory. This isn't nearly as common in Windows 2000 and XP.

Happy con-Trails!

I think a reboot helps no matter what O/S you are running. I have W2000 on a PIII and the whole thing acts goofy if Idon't reboot once every few hours. For starters a reboot clears out your RAM and refreshes your internet connection, I think.

I do a system restart on the first of every other month. I also defrag, run clean disc, adaware, etc, (not in that order). This works for me, what you have maybe different, depending on your O/S. This may/may not help your internet connection. If you have windows XP, and broadband, you will lose/gain nothing for the internet as far as speed is concerned. Just your system only. My PC is on 24/7 unless I'm out of country/state for 2 or more days.

If your computer is on 24/7 then you had better have good protection because you can be attacked by "undesireables". :( :(

NOTE!!! Do NOT ATTEMPT TO ALTER OR ADJUST ANYTHING ON YOUR COMPUTER UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING. SOME THINGS YOU CAN DO CAN CAUSE IT TO MALFUNCTION OR STOP COMPLETELY! IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS... PLEASE CONSULT A QUALIFIED TECHNICIAN!!!

Great input. It is true that this will happen if your computer is on a long time and you load game after game or program after program. Also note that things like Norton Internet Security and other Tray Icons ( TSR - Terminate and-Stay-Resident Programs ) can cause you to loose memory as well ) Prime example is Norton Internet Security. Alot of people out there love that program... me included... but did you know that if you invoke " Parental Control... it can suck away almost 200 meg of memory for it depending on your settings? Also I have noticed that when my antivirus and internet security are invoked... I will get jer or " Stop and Go Graphics" as I call them. You know... your playing a game and it freezes for a sec and then goes again.

I DO NOT RECOMMEND SHUTTING ANY FIREWALL OR SECURITY SYSTEM DOWN IF YOU ARE ON THE INTERNET THRU A CABLE MODEM OR LAN!!! ONLY IF YOU ARE DISCONNECTED IS THIS A HELPFUL TOOL!!!

This can be caused by TSR's as well as your page file being on the same hard drive. There is a disscussion on this board about that as well.

I personally do a complete reinstall of XP every year because your registry will become clogged with tons of garbage after installing and uninstalling programs. The program will say it is removing the old registry entries... but in fact they usually leave traces or more behind. That too will slow down your computer alot! I have seen registries that when printed out are over 100+ pages long... and have of the stuff listed is not on the computer anymore. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO REMOVE REGISTRY ENTRIES!!! THAT IS A VERY FAST WAY TO GET YOUR COMPUTER TO STOP WORKING!!! I used to work on registries when I worked at a shop and you really need to know what you are doing when you are in one.

Final note is that you could also go out and get yourself a memory cleaner. There are little programs out there ( freeware ) that will help you to free up memory on your system while it is running. Take caution again using these programs... they too can have adverse side effects! :-k  ](*,)
