| Any of you pilots have experience with kit planes? I think I would love to build one, and am wondering if any of you have any knowledge of them. I am looking at a couple of brands offering single seat models. They use Rotax 503's and are pretty much all wood. (for frames at least.) While I won't even have the money for the kit until the end of the summer, I am interested in information. I am probably going to subscribe to kit plane magazine. The plane I am thinking about can be found at this link: http://www.loehle.com/SportParasolKit.htm Looks to be around 70 or so of them built and the design has been around for some time. |

I am a mechanic and I have experience with kit cars. A couple of points that will enhance your experience: 1) Whatever the hardware recommendation, upgrade it, use only the strongest and lightest with respect to strength first to help with safety; you can never over-engineer the safety. 2) Trial assembly/fit, the devil is in the details and in this game the details can kill you deader than road burgers, so trial assemble and ensure an exact fit before final assembly. Finally, make a copy of the plans/assembly instructions so you can freely make notes and sketches on one set and have a spare clean set to refer to (coffee stains do not qualify as notes  ).
p.s. one trick we use when doing custom/kit cars is to use styrofoam blocks to make dummy pieces for fitment of other components and to gauge component relationships.
That's all I have from the automotive world that might help you out, good luck and enjoy. |

Plane kits and gyroplanes are autlawed in our country because a huge amout of people got killed and hurt others by using them. (this only applies if you mean a "do it yourself" plane).
It is surely an interesting lil thing and I would like to see hte outcome. |

| I think I am going to wait. Right now is just not a good time. But they sure look cool. In a few years I will get some money from a trust fund and will have more options. |
