Small problem here. I have dug out my microphone to use with liveATC on online community. All tests tell me it works fine, but i get the sound fed through my speakers all the time its on. I want fellow simmers and ATC to hear me, but i dont need to hear myself! Ive looked at all the settings i can find and have found nothing to turn this off. Iv'e never used a pc microphone before....is this the way they all are? Its really annoying....any help?

Its a cheap $5 dollar mic (labtec 514)
im running XP, but i cant seem to find out what sound card I have.

thanks

This is a common problem. What you need is a headset which consists of a Combo (Microphone and Earphones). This will prevent your transmissions from being retransmitted back through your microphone. You may still hear what you are saying. However, it will not be a problem.

For just a few dollars, you should also get a duplex connector which will allow you to connect the jack from your speakers and the jack from your headset to the speaker jack. 8) 8)

thanks skipper. Im not having any actual feedback issues cause of placement of speaks and mic, I just dont like the sound of my own voice!
I suppose a headset is the way to go though.

Perhaps your voice would sound better if you got rid of the inexpensive $5 microphone and upgraded to a better microphone. I do not know anybody who likes the sound of their own voice when recorded via a Mattie Mattlel Microphone. You owe it to yourself to hear yourself like everybody else hears you. You may even decide to make a demo tape and send it to the local radio station. 8) 8)

Actually if u got into ur sound control panel. double click the little speaker down in the corner to get there. Click options, properties. you should see play back and recording. make sure play back is selected. at the bottom there should be check boxes you should see microphone. if unchecked check it. then click ok. you are taken back to the main volume control panel. you should see a slider labeled microphone. clicke mute under the slider labeled microphone. this should mute the output to your speakers eliminating you hearing yourself but others will still be able to hear you. Got if not post back and ill help ya. later

That is some excellent advise from Jeff. However, I'll stand by my previous advise for you to get rid of the "Tonka Toy" microphone and get a real microphone. Even if you don't have to listen to yourself anymore, think about the poor guys at the other end of the line who have to listen to you. Think about what it is like when you go to the Drive-In window at Taco-Bell and try to order a Soft Taco and a small drink. It usually takes two or three tries until you get your order correct because you and the order taker have a hard time understanding each other. 8) 8)

PS::About two years ago, the Drive-In order taker asked me if my order was for here or to go????????

Thanks Jeff. I had checked the control panel a couple ot times and thought it odd no microphone option was not there :?:
The best part is, my bass boost option was there to add also. :P I had had to create a shortcut to my soundmax panel to turn off bass boost EVERY time I restarted or turned on the pc. This should over ride it. Two birds with one stone!

Im sure ill upgrade or probably get a headset, but till then this will work.

thanks again.

Wal Mart has an excellent little headsets for fifteen to twenty dollars, I use one myself and they even have a mic cutoff/volume control right on the cord.

If you are serious about upgrading to a "nice" headset then take a serious look a the PLANTRONICS series of headsets. I have had my unit for about a year and love it for it's quality. I use my unit with the VOICEBUDDY SOFTWARE from E-Dimensional. 8) 8)
