Any-ways, ive studed planes many years but not found out once about how to land a plane properly, on flight sim 04, i do a short flight in a boeing 757-200 thomas cook, from heathrow to spain (majjorca) when ido i know when to start to decened and how the hell do i allways land in the middle of the runway :S plzplzplz help:D

Answer #1: Practise. Practise practise practise. Then one day you'll hit the center of the runway with ease.

Answer #2: Most downloads come with a readme.txt file. Open it up with Notepad and follow the instructions. Simple really.

Hope that helps.

I'm not very good with that stuff myself so I can't really answer ya. I've heard the lessons that come with FS...they teach you a lot...if you do them. I'm sure you will find that true as well.

About the flaps....it really depends. For example, in GA aircraft. you don't really have many boundaries....just after your speed drops below the blow out you may add flaps....but it is safer to go it by feeling...if you feel that the aircraft is hard to control...or the angle of attack is too high, add flaps....

For the Big Airliners, go with the kneeboard, that usually contains the data on how to add flaps according to speed and weight.....

About the second part of the question....if you are in a cruise, say FL330 - FL380 you should decend with about 1800 feet per second, and start decending about 100-120 miles from the destination....it still depends on the speed and the winds....but it will get you where you need to be when attempting a landing.

Use the 3 to 1 rule. Three miles per thousand feet.

Take your altitude in feet and drop the last 3 zeros, and multiply that number by 3.

Altitude: 25000 feet

drop the zeros...

25

multiply that by 3

25 x 3 = 75

75 Miles is the distance it will take you to descend from 25000 feet.

*Add 2 miles onto your distance for every 10 knots of tailwind.*

You should do this with a descent rate of 1500-2000 FPM and a speed of 250 KIAS.

Remember, your altimeter is showing altitude above sea level, not above ground so factor in the arrival airports elevation. For this I use the circuit altitude. I subtract it from my current altitude and voila...I have the distcance to descend down to circuit height. ...cause I dont know about anyone else here..but I dont shoot 75 mile 25000' straight in approaches. :P

As for flaps... I normlally descend without flaps at higher altitudes. I extend them gradually as i get lower and the airspeed restrictions come into play. Like below 250 KIAS under 10000. Most of my planes descend nicely at 1500-1800 FPM@250 KIAS with a level deck. All except for the hotrod DC-8s I have... they love to nose down and they need flaps to avoid an overspeed...let alone the 250 knot rule. Peppy things they are!

About the DC-8, wouldn't it be enough to just exend slats.

EDIT: Except for the fact that the DC-8 does not have leading edge flaps (slats) I just woke up

I really like the way you think. Good math, but....imprecise I'd have to say. Just that it isn't unibersal...ok, most of the jets can be decended using that equasion, but not props like the King Air or the Pilatus for example. They have a much steaper decend angle because of their low groundpeed possibilities.

Here's a link to a site that has several pages of formulas for figuring out everything from decent rate to crosswind drift rates to fuel management.

http://www.flightinfo.com/default.htm

click on the "Need A Rule of Thumb" link on the right hand side of the page. Then from the drop-down menu select a category.

Here are some landing tips for you:

1) IMO the secret to a good landing is getting the aircraft configured early. this means that your airspeed, flaps, and gear are set for landing and that you are on a straight-in approach for the runway or established on the glideslope. in a large jet you should have the aircraft configured at least 6 or 7 miles from the airport.

2) watch the FAR end of the runway when landing. this should help you align the airplane with the runway centerline.

3) constantly scan your VSI NEEDLE and your ATTITUDE INDICATOR to maintain the proper descent rate ( around 700ft/min) and attitude (about 2 degrees nose up).

4) adjust your outside view if you havent already done so. a zoom of .60 is a more accurate view. it is difficult to land with the default zoom of 1.00. (View>options).

hope those help
