what program is best for repainting? I was thinking adobe photoshop, but there are so many kind of it, all varing in prices. Any advice welcome.

| All you really need is an image editor that can do layers and transparency, beyond that the sky is the limit. You will also need DXTbmp for image conversion. |

Two most popular ones are Photoshop (any version past 5 is great) and Paint Shop Pro. The latter is way cheaper. With plugins and add-ons, Photoshop can easily exceed the 3K mark...easily.

I use Paint Shop Pro 8 and I like it, I've gotten so used to it and familiar with all it's quirks, I wouldn't switch. I guess if you have the opportunity to test the different programs, it'll be a matter of personal choice as to which one you go with.
Ask 10 different people which one they like, and you'll get 10 different answers. |

| You will also find that some of the tutorials available on the web actually use PSP8. |

Its one of those personal pref's as the boyz have said. I use both when needed, but always go back to Photoshop for the serious stuff. I believe, and could be wrong but JASC is now being bought out by Corel so don't know what's going to happen to Paint Shop Pro anymore :(. Photoshop has way more plugins and interfaces nicely with other Adobe, and third party products. But Paint Shop Pro is way easier to use and much cheaper. All depends...I think GS would agree with me here...how fast you wanna go...and how $$ you got kid?
Just try out the demos. See what tickles your fancy.

I believe version 4 or 5 used to be shareware. If you can find it via Goog you can confirm that and use it. Should be fine.
