If it's just a processor upgrade, we would need to know your motherboard spec./what proc. socket style/front side bus speed and then we can make some intelligent suggestions.

I used to run an xp1800+, but my new machine is Pentium 4@3ghz.

Again I second the motion by GS. To be honest...your current cpu is a little on the low side in terms of a upgrade of the cpu only method. Most likely, you will be looking at a complete u/g...mobo and cpu. All depends on how much you can afford really. You can go with a AMD Athlon64 FX-51 1600MHz FSB or maybe can only get an AMD 3000. Depends on your wallet.

Shop around...hit the PC sites and get your info together. Then make the call. Suggest AMD over Intel if you are into gaming. But more than likely...you will be looking at replacing your CPU and using your current mobo as a mutated frisbee...

I just upgraded from a AMD Athlon 2100 XP to an AMD Althon "64 Processor " 3000+ 939 pin. Had to purchase a new Mother Board for it as well but was able to transfer everything else ( Video, Ram, Sound ECT. ) and the man at the store was right. IT ROCKS!!! Now instead of 7 to 8 FPS in Seattle and other major cities... I am getting 25 to 30.... BIG JUMP! Note: I have my frames locked at 25 do to a little info from Exxman... but if I unlock them I can get around 40 to 60 in outlaying areas! The total for the M/B and CPU was about $355.00. Not too bad but yet one week's paycheck. When you look at the overall scheme of it... it is less than a $1.00 a day to make me happy! \:D/ =D>

Hope this helps out and I too Second the Motion from Exxman... AMD is way better for games in my opinion that Pentium!

Im running an AMD 3000+, with 2x512Mb Pc2700, My frame rates slow down a fair bit in VERY heavy scenery but overall pretty good! Graphics card = Radeon 9600.
