i built a computer and when I start it, after about 30 seconds, the whole thing just shuts down and dies. Because of this, I can't load the OS. i think the problem is the video card, but I'm not sure.

specs:
motherboard: ECS 755-A2
memory: Mushkin 512MB
processor: Athlon 64 3200+
hard drive: Seagate 160MB
video card: Creative Labs model#CT6970

thanks

I second what Ex said. I had the same problem on start-up with mine and it turned out to be the FSB setting didn't match the new memory.

You can still enter the bios settings at the point you're at to make the corrections. Good luck.

FSB=Front Side Bus

Yes, it's in the bios settings.

Go through the Mobo manual and check all of settings pertaining to clock speed. It's in there.

also,
switching the power thing from 115v to 230v keeps the machine on, but some funcitons are disabled (off switch, lights). does this have anything to do with my problem?
thanks for the info so far! :D

I hope that your next post is not something like;

:( "What's that burning smell coming from the chassis?"

or...

" Why are there sparks coming from the ram chips when I turn it on...?"

Lorti, sounds as if you are taking an unnecessary risk man. If you have to ask questions like that voltage one...man, if it weren't for the fuse in the PSU you would be out quite a bit of cash.

You are at the point where you are going to permanently damage the system...if not already. Take it to a shop and let them do it.
