Hi I'm trying to convince my parents to buy me a video card. What are the benefits of a good video card BESIDES GAMES?

hehe go for it. Fortunately for me i've got a dad who too enjoys games so it's far easier for me.
But i can tell you this: if they or you are not into some kind of proffessional grapics designer or sth, there are no benefits at all. And also if so, you would have to buy a special card that is designed for such applicatons. But i bet you're not...
Tell them this: i am a lonely person and everyone teases me at school for this card of please mom can we get a new one plzplzplzplzplz
or this: a new card makes you happy and then your grades go up and then you can get a decent job and they'll never have to but another computer component again.

How about just trying to work a deal with them. You could go with a "I'm trying to become financially responsible" approach. I'll work to earn half of the cost and mom and dad kick in the other half.
Do a little research on the best card for the amount you wanna put into it (more work = more money = better quality card). Present your parents with a list of high end and low end cards and work the one you want somewhere in the middle. Then you can show that your not going after the most expensive but you'd like better than the cheapest model. |

| So far, i think ricktobin's idea is the best... but if that doesn't suit your taste... try disconnecting the monitor cable from the current vid card just a little so that the monitor will go out from time to time, making it seem like the vid card isn't working... then you'll HAVE to get a new one right? good luck |

A note on my last post...
The method I suggested above would work for me if one of my kids approached me with "I want a new video card". I have 4 kids, 3 of which are into FS and computers...and we all know how expensive this hobby...hmm.
make that obsession, can be. Sooo, if they want something as pricey as a new video card they're darn sure gonna have to show me some motivation on their part.
NEWS ALERT....
Keep on eye on ATI, they're getting ready to release a new vid card that in my opinion will give all the other manufactures a run for their money. It might take the average kid a couple of months to save up for, but I'm thinking it'll definately be worth the wait. |

When I was about 15 I wanted a new guitar amp. Mine was just rank. So...I took a glass of salted water and poured it over the tubes in the back and fired it up! Took the thing 5 minutes to puke up but she was an inferno not long after that.
My Grandfather felt so bad for me they took me to the music store the next day, and after making me empty out my bank account, and along with a generous donation from them, I had the amp I wanted.
This is just my story...and it worked for me only. It is not a tutorial on "How to upgrade your PC"...

So, I just poured salt water into my computer and you wouldn't believe the sparking and noises it makes now... well... made. (kidding)
BTT:
I make my living as a CAD drafter, and for many years I have bought and built computers based off the maximum required top end game machines. Why? Because, if it can run an intensive video active game then I may not be able to crash it when I get my models done and render and annimate them to show customers what the inside of thier 100 million dollar airplanes are going to look like. If you get interested in CAD modeling the video card MUST be top notch. |

Agreed Cat1. To repaint something with Photoshop is one thing...to fly it in FS is another, but to draw/animate/render a model of a 747 in 3DS is really where you tax your system. So, if you can run the CAD, the rest is easy.
Hmmm...viche...you wanna be a CAD artist?? ;)
Don't listen to me...I'm the person your Moms and Dads always warned you about...
