| Hi! I'm 14 and ive been flying for about 2 years now. My mom is afraid of flying and her fear is getting the way of my training. It's hard because she doesn't trust anyone who has less than a thousand hours and she won't let me fly with the fbo's instructor because he only has 500 :x. She is afraid to let friends fly with me "beacause of liability" and just thinks that flying in general is dangrous. Any advice on what to do? |

| Get the figures for people killed in auto accidents, especially those under 18. Then get the figures for people killed in general aviation crashes, especially those under 18. You should be able to continue flying, but dont hold out hope for a drivers license  |

Really sounds like a phobia... i am height-o-phobic but i really enjoy flight, be it fs or real :D no logic there but... perhaps, yes, follow gs´s advice and if that does not help then get your mom to a shrink
moms should not be allowed to watch so many aircraft disaster movies!
oh and i´d add a little to gs: try getting some statistics for the plane you are flying. Should be even better, because as far as I know most fatal accidents (totaled) happen with larger planes. |

Youre more likely to get killed in a car accident on your way to the airport than you are in a plane itself. In the air, everyone has the same basic training, and follows the same rules..generally speaking. Unlike on the roads where everyone is in a hurry and drive like retards. Also, there is less traffic up there. Planes are maintained to a higher standard than cars, so the likelyhood of a mechanical failure is reduced. If a problem arises, pilots are trained to deal with it. :)
But shes your mum, and your her baby... and she worries. Its what mums do! |

I tried that already. She just said that a lot more people own cars than planes. |

That doesn't change the fact that your risks are much higher getting into a vehicle with someone...actually supports your claim.
Fear is a big one for parents. We protect our children from anything and everything...but we shouldn't do that sometimes. Sometimes our kids need to go out and just 'do it' to learn for themselves. Add to this the fact that we can't protect them from everything anyway. If we try to do that then we may as well keep them in a cage or chain them to a post so they never get hurt. Not a life to live for sure!
In a few short years you will be able to make the call without requiring consent. Tell her that. You are going to do it anyways and the risk is not as great being in a plane than it is crossing the street or walking into a corner store late at night...does she stop you from doing that too?
Appreciate the fact that you respect her feelings, in turn, ask her to respect yours as well...in a nice way of course... ;)
Good luck to ya man. Hope you get what you want!

Strangely enough, I have an extreme fear of flying. Well, not flying so much, but crashing. Now considering that I have worked in aviation in one form or another for over half my life some might think that to be a bit irrational. Who better than I would know what “could” go wrong, some of the planes that are out there in the commercial sector and several business jets have my designs in them. What it comes down to for me is that if I’m in the front of the plane, like in the jump seat, I’m OK, but as a passenger I’m on the floor curled up in the fetal position sucking my thumb and wetting myself, well I’m kidding about that part, but it probably made you laugh  . Really, it’s a control issue. I don’t know the pilot, I don’t know his skills, and I don’t know if he is having a bad day, ETC. Ever heard the phrase “Don’t drive angry”? Well, that goes to planes as well.
And if you happen to be a SWA pilot that shot his first approach ever to KTUL with 110 souls on board and ended up chasing the gauges for 7 of the worst minutes of my life and became current in that landing alone for the next two years back in ’98… You probably remember me and I hope your backside has grown back by now. |

Okay then, time to pull out the statistical trump card.....
You have a better chance of getting hit by lightning than dying in an aircraft mishap. |

Oh and mother's day is on the way. Try some bribe... the good side is that you don't have to fake because as GS said, she IS your mother.
Just try to be nice and eventually she will melt. |

| Maybe she is secretly trying to get you to do some task you may have forgotten about or ignored? Hard to say from this end, but keep the faith brother, the sky is forever. |

I think I may have found your trump card.
Per year, there are more deaths involving weather hazards, fires, drownings, pedestrian-traffice accidents, food poisonings, suffocations, accidental falls, AIDS, drunk drivers, homicides, suicides, firearms, automobile accidents, and heart disease.
http://www.annarborflyers.com/public/deathbom.htm
So, I guess you should avoid swimming, crossing streets, and eating.
Print that page out and ask her what she thinks now. |

i thought my fiancee would be scared of flying but when she came along with me on one of my lessons she got mad at me after we has landed because we didn't do any stalls, I was bewildered.
Like everyone else has said, flying is safe. She will eventually learn that and hopefully she will be flying with you soon. |
