| If I get a new computer, how can I move all my add-ons and settings to the new computer? Maybe it's impossible? |

Addons like aircraft/gauges/panels aren't a problem. Its only a problem with a/c packages that are using their own dll's or modules that you have to reinstall (ie. PMDG/Aerosoft/Level D etc.)
Settings are specific to the PC so a complete reinstall of FS is in order and a must.

Hi viche12345,
this is what I do: should work with almost all addons..
keep a complete copy of your current FS installation. Then on the new computer, just install the very minimum FS (keep the path same as the original installation).
finally copy the old files and overwrite the files you have just installed. This will take care of the few registry fs9 uses (not really that many)
as Exx has mentioned, some aircraft may not work: in which case, you can just reinstall those ones with error. |

Just out of curiosity there Rana...how many entries does FS use in the registry? And if not registered properly...can one do it manually?
Many thanks my friend...you are da man!!

oh dear, its going to be so embarrassing if I am wrong :)
Quote: how many entries does FS use in the registry? And if not registered properly...can one do it manually?
11 :) and yes, I believe it can be done manually as well (with some minor ifs and buts).. ofcourse the user will need directX, GDI32, COMCTL32, Windows Media player, ACM codecs (comes with OS), and C Runtimes. most user will have all those components.
well as you know, most settings are read from cfg files (fs9.cfg, scenery.cfg, terrain.cfg and so on...)... so its not really surprising that registry usage for FS9 is not a lot...
Code: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator\9.0]
"MP9Check"="3"
"Zone"="http://zone.msn.com/asp/fs04redir.asp"
"Version"="9.0"
"Launched"="1"
"PID"="69768-442-2646154-94352"
"DigitalProductID"=hex:
"EXE Path"="E:\\Flight\\Flight Simulator 9"
"CDPath"="I:\\"
"VersionType"="RetailVersion"
"InstalledGroup"="5"
"LangID"=dword:00000009
thats the jist of it... some of them are not even used by FS9 itself..
ofcourse other software like ActiveSky and such may have their own registry..
don't know about the big birds (PMDG and stuff), but most aircraft I personally came across don't really use registry.. this includes realsimulation, lago, and all freeware aircraft.. |

First of all, my new computer has only one hard drive labelled 'C'. My old computer contains two drives, one labelled 'C' and the other labelled 'D'. FS9 is installed on drive D. Will this be a problem if I move the entire main folder to drive C on the new PC?
Second, do I need to touch the registry? Or does FS9 take care of it?
Finally, there is no 'minimal' installation choice. There is typical and complete. Guess I have to choose typical installation to install only the minimal files...or am I wrong? (sorry for the obscure english) |

| why don't you install drive "D" on the second machine. Wouldn't it be simpler, no? |

Partition and format your new machine as follows:
C drive: 10GB
D drive: remaining portion of space
Put Xp on C. FS and your swapfile on D. Thats it. Leave C for Xp only. Put everything else on D.
Install using the 'complete' option. FS will make the necessary entries in the reg. Thass it...

You mean move 'D' from my old computer to the new computer and follow the above instructions? |

Moving files won't install anything. You still have to reinstall programs. Install everything then move the folders over for the addons that you have on the old drive. Should work as long as no addon was installed using an installer.
