wHEN MAKING AN INITIAL CALL TO A TOWER YOU INFORM THEM YOU HAVE ATIS INFORMATION ....... IN THIS CASE YOU HAVE INFORMATION "X" OR x-RAY
YOUR PILOT ASSUMES YOU CHECKED THE ATIS LIKE A RESPONSIBLE PILOT TO DETERMINE IF THE WEATHER CONDITIONS ARE MANAGABLE OR NOT
IF ITS BROKEN OR OVERCAST AT 100 OR 200 OR SOMETHING DONT EVEN TRY THE NDB OR LOC APPROCH, YOUR GONA NEED AN ILS |

| to go a little further, i believe each time the atis information is updated the letter will change. It starts with alpha, when there is an update, you will then be listening to information bravo, then charlie, and so forth... at least that's the way i understand it... |

ATIS stands for Automated Terminal Information Service. In this case, a terminal is the same as an airport. To improve controller effectiveness and to reduce tower & ground frequency congestion, an ATIS is prerecorded and broadcast at busy airports. It's usually renewed all hours or whenever an official weather report is received. It contains basic weather information, runway in use, communication procedures and NOTAM's.
Anytime the ATIS is updated, the code representing the new ATIS recording is updated as well. That code being a letter from the phonetic alphabet. It's easier to simply give the code of the latest update and by doing so, serves to verify you actually did receive the most current report. |

| From the link I gave you above, go to NDB Approaches and click on Appr. Plates. It shows you a picture of one and describes everything on them. |
