I got this videocard and need help to optimize its settings so that I can play Fs2004 in maximum settings (or almost)..

I have a Pentium4, 3.0 Ghz (my motherboard only supports agp4) and 512 mb memory.

Thanks

You have a nice pentum there, lets try to get the 6600 better too.

I joined the guru3d forums just for You  and found an interesting topic about a guy who asked weather he could overclock his 128mb 6600 into a 6600gt. Im just conna copy-paste some text here. try to read it all.

---

Check the GeForce 6600 256MB review on the main page...
quote from it:
"The GeForce 6600 at default clock speeds is doing 300 MHz. It's DDR memory is 2x275 thus 550 MHz. Overclocked it was capable of running at 550 MHz core and 575 MHz memory frequency.

The high core overlock is something we observe with almost all 6600 cards, it's just amazing."

So here's your answer :)

---

Ok - I did a little bit overclocking and:

- My XFX Gf 6600 128Mb has 300Mhz core and 670Mhz memory on factory setings - so memory is already overclocked by factory (or they gave better memory chips so they could work at that speed without any problem and without any additional heatsink)

- I overclocked core to 325 and memory to 750Mhz and tested it for 20 minutes without any problem with 3Dmark 2003 and 2005

I dont know why but performance boost wasn't very high - in 3D Mark 2003 it was up 100-120 points (to around 5200 points) and in 3D Mark 2005 it was better from 1750 to 1930 points.

I reversed overclocking to factory defaults after those 20 minutes because i do not trust small fan on my GF card and i couldn't monitor GPU temperature and i didn't want to fry my new card

If as you say GPU can take much more overclocking than that bit that i've done than i will order VGA cooler with temperature contorl and try to beat crap out of my card :)

---

good lord, is that all you dared? Just keep going until you get artifacts, then back down a couple of mhz. If guru3d can get it to 550, with no more cooling i assume, then you should aim for at least 400, then go from there. Don't be a wuss about it!

---

I AM NOT A WOSS AND TO PROVE IT I WILL OVERCLOCK CORE AND MEMORY TO 1GHZ )

Just jokeing

But seriously i decided that little more overclocking can't hurt (or at least shouldn't) and i've setup core for 400Mhz and memory for 700Mhz and this is how my marks have changed:

- 3D mark 2003 (all default settings of free version 340)
before 5176 points
after 6933 points

- 3D mark 2005 (version 1.1)
before 1963 points
after 2505 points

Not bad - not bad at all

I saw no memory artefacts (little snowy dots, right?)
I saw some small core artefacts but it was only few in "Nature" test of 3D mark 2003 and few in "Sailboat" (or whatever the name of this test is) from 3D mark 2005.
Standard factory cooler on XFX GF6600 is realy crapy so i've just run those tests and brought back standard settings. But now i see that with good cooling aplied to card it should take 450 or even 500Mhz and memory should do 800Mhz or more.

So guys by all means buy GF6600 cards because they can stand much overclocking and with good cooling there shouldn't be any problem to get above 8000 points in 3D mark 2003 and something around 3000 points in 3D mark 2005.

Only problem is that (as for socket 775) there are no good cooling systems on the market yet that are dedicated to this platform. So i think i will wait for VGA Silencer NV4 from www.arctic-cooling.com and in the mean time DOOM 3 and Colin 2005 here I come :)

looks like You will have to find a temperature monitor (or buy a good new cooler) and overclock it a little. Let us see where it takes You. Searched for other softmod articles but did not find any reasonable ones. Does not look like You could just unlock anything... and overclocking is a thing i have never done so if You need any help on that, i'll just sit quietly and watch :P

hope this helps

Very helpfull, Thanks :)
I dont understand much about overlocking, youīll never know what the videocard can handle...
I gotta get 3d mark, and a temperature monitor...
By the way, is there any great coolers for videocards?

Looks good and not so costy either. Helio: get rivatuner, it handles some nice temp monitoring.

Hot, like in not cold? It should not be, my already overclocked 6600gt is doing about 40*C. if You exeed 50, take the card back to the shop. (i think) How do You know its hot btw, did You touch it or download rivatuner or something like that?

So please, for Your own sake, download it. As fast as You can. What was the reason of it getting hot, had You been playing any games?

Make sure your fan is running on your card. I just went through this overheating problem. I just bought a new mother board and g-card, because the fan on the g-card stopped working, again. It took out the g-card and fried a capaciter on the mother board.

Sounds like you need a new g-card fan, hopefully not a g-card too.

Im sorry for my english..

Helio,

Your English is fine, better than some Americans. But on the card. You do not have a fan??? GET ONE !!!! As soon as you can if it is possible for your card. The heatsinks on the side are crap, even if you have a fan blowing across them to cool it. In the mean time, do not overclock the card at all until you do.

I'm afraid if you are still having problems of freezing and crashing, you might have already fried your g-card.

Somebody might be able to help on that issue other than me. Are you getting any error messages when it crashes??

Let us know what is happening.

Who is the manufacturer of your card ie. XFX, Gainward etc.? All 6600 series came with fans...you don't have a fan on it?

Itīs a Gigabyte Nvidea Geforce 6600, and it has a heatsink or something but it is not a Fan. My system just stops and then shuts down, thereīs no message, nothing...
Maybe I should go to the store and change it cause this oneīs not in conditions...
I have not overlocked it yet cause Iīm afraid of damage it and I dont know the best way to really do it correctly..
Anyway, is there any great fan that really cools the G-card? are the Fans compatible with all g-cards?
