I have come across different familiar texture maps while browsing my FS2002 folders (the paint layout for the default "Landmark" Freight truck for instance.) and wondered if it is open in 'Paint', could I just redo the graphics or add something to the side of the truck and maybe save the original file first, renamed as a backup, substituting the new file for the old and have the truck show up like that? I know next to nothing about repainting aircraft and the like except that those textures apparently come in multiple layers for added effect or intricacy and that you have to know what you are doing. I hope this query makes sense, it just sounds like it would be possible to edit those viewable default scenery Bmp. textures , having them display properly if the file is replaced, named and allocated properly. Could be lots of easy fun to be had for this newbie if it works but I wasn't sure I wanted to start fooling with default textures without asking around first. :? .....*Effort noises heard as Moderators try and lift harkonnen's 230 lb lazy carcass and his post up and heave it all over to 'Repainter's Corner'!*.....

Yea, all you need is DXTbmp tool, open up default bitmaps, save them as Traga files (TGA), edit in your fave program, and then open them back in DXTbmp and save in desired format (DXT1-3 for scenery, and all above for aircraft, depensing on your choice).

As far as I am aware, when the image is directly viewable in Windows Picture and Fax Viewer or your favorite editor, it is not compressed and therefore directly editable. The main caveat is to remember that FS is 16bit color depth, so pay attention when you save.
