|
|
Ok in the last thread I said I would have a video tutorial on how to land a 747 with flaps fully deployed 22 to 35 miles out from the airport. Well the video tutorial is about 11 mins long and it will take about 5 hrs on dial up to upload the video so I figured instead of doing that, I would try and write the tutorial out so here goes:
Flight Planner:
Select your departure and destination airport. I used KDTW to KORD. I'm not into the IFR flight plan so I used VFR with direct GPS. Hit the find route button and there should be a map with a line going from point A to point B. At KORD I want to land at runway 32L. I zoom in onto that airport and click the yellow lines and a window pops up giving me the runway number and the frequency which is 108.95 Remember that! On the map. I set up way points to get me lined up with the runway by dragging that line to a way point that is lined up with the runway 40 or 50 miles out from the airport. Save the flight plan and your ready to go.
Departing the Airport:
To minimize distraction while flying, I set the Altitude hold selector to 5300 ft the airspeed hold selector to 344 Hit Shift+2 and the radio stack will appear. Input the runway frequency in to the Nav 1 radio but do not engage it yet. switch on the autothrottle and the Nav/GPS mode switch to GPS because when you are in the air, you want the plane to follow that line. Thats where you hit the Nav button once your at an altitude of 1500 ft. The plane will turn towards that line thats on your GPS. You'll want the autopilot on to maintain speed and altitude once your in the air.
40 Miles from destination airport
Open the ATC window and select Nearest aiport option. Watch for the name of your aiport so you can contact ATC and they'll tell you which runway to land (most likely it will be the runway that you want to land on). On the speed hold selector, decrease your speed to 299. Once you are on the final leg to the airport via following the line on the GPS you wanna switch off the Nav button and turn the Nav/GPS mode switch to NAV then hit the Nav button. Hit shift+2 to bring up the radio stack and engage the Nav 1 button on the bottom of the stack. In a few moments, the navigation radio or whatever you call it will take over the plane. I've enabled the visual flight path to aid me in my landing. You can do that also if you wnat to.
32 miles from airport
At this point decrease your speed to 197. On the primary flight display, keep on eye on your speed. when it gets to 265 that when you hit F8 to deploy the flaps to full and hit G to deploy the landing gear. During all this the plane should be flying on its own with the help of the Nav 1 radio. It will line it self up with the runway. If you turned on the visual flight path guides you'll notice that they are above you. Thats good. Wait until you right below it and the guide lines are about to hit the top of the plane. Once it does that, switch on the Approach hold button. When doing that, it should turn off the Nav hold switch and the altitude hold button. The plane will not center itself out with the flight path guide boxes until you get about I think 12 or 15 miles from the runway. At this point don't do anything. When you get about a mile from the runway, switch off the speed hold button and be prepared to hit F1 to decrease the engines or whatever its supposed to do. Leave the APP button on. I kill the engines when I'm about 50 yards from the runway. The nose should already be pitched up automatically by the approach hold switch. Once you land, turn off the APP and point the nose down to get the front wheel to touch the runway and wa la.... you've landed with flaps fully deployed some 30 miles out from the airport.
Just to remind you, when I did this, I have the realism setting set to high. Normally when you have flaps deployed and your going real fast you will get a warning. But if you slow your speed down to 197 like I did you don't have to worry about damaging your flaps. I know this is the unorthodox way of landing a jet and I know this couldn't be done in real life but it works in the simulation and I have had many successful landings using this technique. Now you don't have to use this technique. I did this just so I can contribute more to this site and I hope people can benifit from this litte tutorial. Let me know what you think. |

| No. I've tried uploading it but my internet connection won't stay on long. I hate dial up and I can't get DSL because I live out in the boonies. |

Give you an 'A' for effort. The video was compressed a bit much so it was very difficult to read the guages and stuff, and some of the text could have stayed on the screen longer but overall...not bad.
I know some of our hardcore 'fly by the numbers' members are going to take issue with the procedures but hey...not all of us are pro's right?
Good stuff.

| Thanks Exxman. I had to recompress it otherwise it would have taken 5 hrs to upload and nobody in town was willing to let me use the computer because they were afraid of getting a computer virus. Does your computer have a virus since you downloaded this video? Anyways, I agree the text could have stayed on longer, but I was in between other video projects so this was kind of a rush job in the editing phases. Thank you for the "A" :) |

I'll second the A! Could perhaps split the video up into a few files so that you're not uploading the whole thing all at once?
Yeah... some of the procedures were questionable... but hey, that's the beauty of Flight Simulator, you can fly by the books or just do your own thing! |

Koo, what do you use for compression and codec? I stick with Sorensen Squeeze...one of the best around and really worth the $$. Compresses to tons of codecs, formats and is easy to use. Take a 800MB video and put it to 4MB with no loss whatsoever! Do check it out.

A very galant effort, nice job. Same issues concerning compression. But I wasn't able to see the whole thing. I got a codec error 1/2 way thru.
Probably the virus you added into it. Seriously though. He cannot get a virus from sending out a video. Not only that, if he is that worried about it, he would have an anti-virus that not only scans incoming viruses, but also outgoing viruses, as I do.
Good job though. :D :D :D

I can't reply to your post there Myhead...your avatar is making me gag. Come on man, get rid of that avatar.
Ardie...you can get infected by a third party thru file transfer...if you know how to do it... ;)

I'm gonna split the video up so there is no loss in compression and I'll repost it. Some of the procedures are questionable but as long as nothing gets damaged on the jet its all good 8)

I checked out that site. Very cool. Wish it was cheaper though.

The codec error might have been when I loss internet connection about 25 mins before it was done uploading. But I was able to resume right where it left off when I connected to the net again. The business owners around worry too much about things like that.
Thanks for the comments folks :D |

| WSFILMS, if you are going to take that tutorial to the next level, I suggest you tidy up your IFR flying skills and procedures, and try to be more "by the book" in the next release. Although I agree with the "A"-s for the effort, I'd have to give ya a C- for the procedures  |
