Just wondering if there is any web site that allows you to search for near misses!

I was flying from Amsterdam to Dublin yesterday and as we were flying over the U.K I had seen an Brithish Airways 747 next to us (a321). Suddenly this 747 passed under us and look extreemly close!! I estimated that it was no more than 7 or 8 storey building away from us when he went by!

What is the minimum range?

Separation minima in controlled airspace is 1000 feet vertical or 5 nautical miles lateral. More then often, both are applied, but only one is nececary. Air mises are very rare, among other reasons because a controller is allowed to have two under his control. Third time he has a mis (and that's no disaster, only two planes being closer then allowed) he/she loses the licence.

Lateral separation is reduced to 3 miles on the ILS, though with speed restrictions.

I've read a bit in the local news lately about Canadian aviation practices...maximum flight hours, mechanical upkeep, minimum weather and visibility rules.....none of it good compared to the U.S. and U.K. Read about too many near misses around Pearson, too. We must be proud of it or something, CYYZ is apparently ridiculously expensive to land at, compared to the other bigger airports worldwide. My Dad was a Flight Dispatcher at Air Canada for many years, and it was always (and is) a source of pride, but lately it seems they're running their pilots and planes ragged in order to stave off bankruptcy...it's a shame...and some groups are crying "UNSAFE!"

Funny you mention this!
Yesterday I flew from Kuala Lumpur to Heathrow when, all of sudden, over the Netherlands, an EasyJet A320 passed us on only several 100's of yards on the right!!!
I could easily distinguish the pilots and passengers, although it happened in an instant..The airbus was also in the exact same flight level as us (747-400)..
Guess this was a pretty close call as well!

When I hear near miss, I can not think of it the same way most pilots, or anyone for that matter, does. When I think of a near miss, I think of two planes that collided, but the nearly missed each other.

Dear Michaelcraddock,

A near miss to a passenger may be a completely different thing to a pilot.
I would imagine it would look pretty scary to a passenger to see a strange
plane you never saw before with a pilot you never met get within that range, but I don't think the pilots mind quite as much as the passengers.
(unless they are thinking about terrorists)

I do not think there is a web site that allows you to search for near misses.

'Near miss' is a bit of a misnomer, eh? I think I remember a 'near miss' described up here as two planes coming within a kilometre of each other in the air. Several times over the years, living near Pearson Int'l (CYYZ) I have looked up and said, "Holy crap' as two planes look really close to each other in the air. Most times it's a bit of an optical illusion....but a few times I have wondered just what the heck ATC is thinking. 8O

My shop is about 1 mile away from the airport. I see props and jetliners all the time, looking like they are on a collision course. Either one is coming in, or the other going out.

But dogone it, they never hit. :evil: Not that I really want them to.

But.........

I was on a flight about 4 months ago to florida from the UK, it was First Choice. We where over the coast of South C. We had two close calls, both were so close I could see every detail of the plane, but you had to look fast! Both were Delta's 737. They were both about 1000 feet away, maybe 500, but still seem too close. Iv also had one close call when I was flying a Piper Warrior, I was getting close to turning downwind leg on landing (VFR) and all of a sudden, here comes a cessna out of no where, it was about 500 feet, the pilot had taken off the wrong runway and was flying through my flight path. It was a Close call indeed, always nice to land after a stressfull day in the air.

Holy Moly...I guess it would be nice to touch down safe after airborne adrenaline rushes like that. Serious stuff, eh? Thanks for posting.
