Taxiing with one engine

I was on a northwest dc-9-32 on a flight from mem to phl. As soon as we landed, the pilot steered the aircraft to a taxiway and shut down the right engine (its was evident because I was sitting in the very back :( ). He then continued to taxi. Was this normal, or an actual engine failure?

Normal cause these jets are meant to taxi with 1 engine.

That's a pretty standard procedure on taxi to and from the runway particularly at airports with extended waiting time for takeoff. It’s also a good measure to conserve fuel.

Most often seen with aircraft where the engines are mounted fairly close to the centerline of the airframe.

wow, but doesn't that cause a problem with turning the aircraft making it harder for the pilot?

slightly, but with the engine close to the fuselage, it doesnt really matter. The larger jets cant really do it, unless they have two opposite engines running, the ones that are close to the body, not further out.

I heard that some 747 carriers shut down both outboard engines after landing, and I know that DC-10's and MD-11's shut down their centre engine (no:2) after landing.

PJ that is correct, it happens quite often, to help save fuel. However what im saying about the big jets is that they cant shut down the two inner engines (2 and 3) as the force on the wing from the outside engines is too great.

Very weird. I've tried taxiing on one engine in the Posky CRJ-200 and had a devil of a time just trying to keep the thing on the center line of the runway/taxiway I was on. If I used the left engine, it wanted to pull right and, of course, vice versa so I wind up riding the rudder and practicing my profanity. I have enough trouble with the ground handling of that plane so I said fo-git it and used both engines at idle........and the brakes.

Normal... Airlines do this to save gas and run time on engines....
