How do older aircraft such as the dc-9 and the 727 fly? Do they use an fmc in order to navigate?

727's have all kinds of stuff in them. So many have been held privately for so long that you will see some of the wildest customs done to 'em. Many of the airframes have completely modern flight decks during repeated refits down through the years. Boeing itself is still actively involved in many of refits as well. It is true that originally the earlier models lacked the nav equipment necessary for intercontinental flight.

I was on a northwest dc-9 recently, and I saw the cockpit was far from modern. Does northwest use VOR navigation for their flights in the dc-9?

I think all DC-9ers use VOR and NDB's for navigation.
