Has anyone in here stepped away from powered airplanes for just a sec to try out a sailplane? I had the opportunity to ride with one of my pilot buddies in one and I think it was great. Very quite, steady flight. It was actually a more comfortable ride than that 152. We just soared along at 42 kias for about 15 minutes. There wasn't much thermal activity, though.

Video? Cool. I have in-flight photos on a disc somewhere. I took a picture of a local Wal-Mart and a lime quary. August is the best time to glide I heard.

I've enjoyed the few glider flights I took in FS9.

ha. Closest to a glider flight i ever came was taking one up to 99,999 feet in FS and dropping it!

There are alot of organizations in my area for gliding, i might check it out-My aunt went gliding in australia one time.

does it require any special qualifications?

Lol

@ King Air: I don't think so. They'll learn you something about weatherknowledge and aerodynamics, and other that that, just a normal sight I think.

Some of my best flying moments have been in a Grob 102 and Grob 103. These high performance gliders are a blast, although they don't have the performance of the newer beasts such as the DG 808S in FSX. I was amazed at the realism of the DG-808...it handles almost exactly like the Grob 102 with just a bit lower sink rate. The tow to altitude is quite realistic as is the thermalling.

I have the privalege of about 300 hrs in sailplanes about half in Arizona at Estrella Sailport just south of Phoenix and the other half in Florida at the gliderport south of Groveland about 30 miles west of Orlando.

I have had some very good experiences. On several occasions in Arizona there would be a gaggle of sailplanes all in the same thermal. I recall looking both up and down and seeing perhaps a dozen at once all in the same thermal as I. On another occasion I was circling at about 11,000 feet some 10,000 feet above the ground below in a thermal with about 50 or 60 hawks and buzzards. They were flying for fun since there was no game in reach at that height. Once in Florida I circule up through a large hole in a layer of small puffy clouds and found myself about 2000 feet above the cloud tops. I would recommend to anyone who can afford to do so to try out the sport.

I also later found out that the tow-plane that pulled us up used to be a crop duster. This was why it seemed to have abundant power. That airplane was very strong. Crop dusters have to be tough and powerful.

About 8 months ago, I just landed my Cessna 172 and finished my PPL stage of the ATPL program and my instructor told me about how he had that weekend before been gliding and said it was amazing, i turned my nose up and said no because i wanted to get my ATPL course finished but did however consider it and eventually said yes coz i just thought that life is too short and i am so glad i did because it is amazing and i would highly recommend it. there we were at 2500 ft going along at 48 knots its just great!

Terrible news guys... my buddy that I flew with (who part-owns the gliding club) told me a glider went down into some trees after the wings broke off of it. The pilot was performing aerobatics when the wings broke.
I didn't hear if the results were fatal or not, but I hope the pilot is alright.
