When filing a flight plan on vatsim...
Do you need to state the exact route of your arrival?
I know you need to for the departure.
And in some flight plans I see weird letter+number combinations such as
... j14, j21, etc
What do those stand for?
Like in this one route it said...
KATL EAONE SPA J14 CREWE J51 FAK, etc
And one more thing....what are the websites used to check for routes?
One flightaware and the other is...? |

| Have you asked VATSIM about their procedures, I am pretty sure they have a huge readme somewhere. As to the rest, one of our resident net-jockeys will be along shortly, I gotta jet. |

To the best of my knowledge, which doesnt amount to much, but J14, and J51 are either interscetions, or a very very small airport. i have an airport 15 min from my house, 50J - Berkeley County Municiple .. only Cessnas, and small Leers ever come and go from there.

Waitaminnit. Aren't those jet airways??? I mean, one of the KATL departure SIDS has that EAONE and if you go to some outfit called SimPlates, the route is right there.
Ahem:
ATLANTA (KATL) to
PHILADELPHIA (KPHL)
in effect: 1100Z to 0200Z
10 - WAYPOINT EAONE to NAVAID/VORTAC SPA
20 - NAVAID/VORTAC SPA to ATS/AIRWAY J14
30 - ATS/AIRWAY J14 to WAYPOINT CREWE
40 - WAYPOINT CREWE to ATS/AIRWAY J51
50 - ATS/AIRWAY J51 to NAVAID/VORTAC FAK
60 - NAVAID/VORTAC FAK to STAR DPNT4

Yes, the j14, j21, etc are jetways.

If you fly via GPS, I only do in small planes, I just write ex EKBI EKYT DIRECT VIA GPS.
If I fly a jet, like the 737, I need to fill a more complicated flightplan with waypoints. It can look like this:
EKCH SID SORGA UT501 MIKSI UT505 TUKTU DCT EKYT
EKCH is the departure airport. SID is the departure route from the airport to the jetway I'm going to use. SORGA is a waypoint, UT501 is a jetway, MIKSI is a waypoint, TUKTU is a waypoint, DCT means DIRECT EKYT. But usually the ATC will vector you when you come close to your dest.

Ok guys, let me help clear this up. I am a C1 controller for KZMA ARTCC on VATSIM, so yea, I do have some clue what I am talking about.
All IFR aircraft are required to have a flight plan. Most airports have standard procedures for departure, such as what your first waypoint is. There are also procedures for arrival. This are called SID's and STAR's (Standard Instrument Departure & Standard Terminal Arrival Route). For an example, check out the Miami 9 departure (SID) and the Cypress 4 arrival (STAR).

Primarily you will get the best routes from www.Flightaware.com , but there are many out there. As for what J21 is; its a Jetway (Basically a predetermined set of intersections in order). Here are all the intersections that make up J21:
DLH GEP HARPI ONTIJ GOOLD SIMJI EYHUX PUMKN OVR JUDGE GOSSL PEABO ICT IRW ADM FUZ ACT CWK SAT LRD TTXOX SUTOL DOTOR CHINO CVM TALPU SILAC TMN PCA MEX TEQ ACA
To find the intersections on an airway check out www.simroutes.com and click "Airways"
Now, notice that some of those points only have three letters. Those are VORs. For example, DLH is DULUTH VORTAC. It operates on a frequency of 112.60. This and a lot of other useful information can be found at www.Airnav.com
Also, another great place to look for information is the ARTCC's VATSIM website. If you ever have any trouble finding a specific ARTCC's website, look at VATUSA's at http://vatusa.org/html/index.php . They are all listed there.
