|
|
I am building a new, budget, gaming computer (the name already sounds like an oxymoron, lol). Unfortunately, I do not have enough money to build a super, smokin' rig.
Rosewill Steel ATX computer case with 400W power supply
ASRock 4CoreDual-VSTA LGA775 mobo
Pentium D 915 (will soon OC this to the max!!!!!!!!!!!)
XFX Nvidia 6800GT with Zalman (will also OC!!)
1 GB DDR266 memory (I will upgrade this later)
I'm not going to list everything, since these components predict computer performance pretty well. Tell me what you think.
EDIT: The total price? ....$310 |

Yeah, I'm using old parts from my Dell, parallel ATA. I cannot afford to get SATA 3gb/s now. But I'm considering it. |

Crap...
My computer won't start up. Once I press the power button, I only see the fans move slightly, then stop. What's going on? |

| The last time mine did that just before the most recent build in late '05, it was the motherboard roasted due to inadequate power supply and cooling. |

Well, now I can rule out the fact that I have a bad CPU or motherboard. I took the whole motherboard and PSU out of the case and powered on from there. I only connected the power supply, the video card, the RAM, and the case speaker (to listen to any beeps). Everything went well; the boot process halted at a message saying something like "No boot media found. Please insert and press any key."
However, the whole system shut off after I decided for it to run for a while. I repeated the process and the same thing happens. The whole system shuts off after 30 seconds from power on.
Is this a power issue now? |

| I thought it was a power issue fromt the beginning. However, I think 400W can satisfy that system. So, it's not an issue of having not enough power, it's an issue of a potentially faulty PSU. |

Well, I was expecting that message, because that syndicates a working CPU and motherboard (all core components are working). Can't this be a heating issue as well? It was so hard to secure all 4 pins into the mobo, that I just gave up and secured 2 of them. I recently realized the heatsink was off-balance. This may have caused overheating.
Giving the heatsink another installation attempt. |

| Well, it took me a while to realize that it takes a lot of force to push all the pins down. I finally got them all secured in the motherboard. Now all that is left is plug in the computer and run it. Will be back. |
