Can some kind person give me an idiot proof easily understood procedure for adding textures to aircraft .For a start ,does the aircraft have to be an original?
What I want to do is add a RAF Tristar texture to an existing Tristar model .boldpilot

well, i can try to help u by guiding you to it, however i need some info first.
Does it say for the repaint that it works with that given model?
where did u download the model as well as the repaint?
The repaint should have come with a txt file, and when you open it up, it should have a part where it says
aircraft.[x]
and a bunch of things/parameters underneath it.
you copy and paste that to your aircraft.cfg inside the model folder, under the last aircraft section, so lets say the last one was aircraft.[3]
u then post it under that section and change the x to a 4 - next number in sequential order.
another way to check if the repaint if for that model is to check if the lines underneath aircraft.[3] and aircraft.[4] match for every line except the folder of the paint being added.
if this doesnt help or ur in a jumble, jus post the links of the two and either me or someone else (*im thinking RD since he's the master*) will try and fix the cfg. for you.
Well, there are a number of people on here with more experience than I, but I can offer some basics. First off, look on the 'net for a program called DXTBMP. (Author: Martin Wright) Notice that when you try to open the aircraft's bitmaps they are usually just all black or all white. This is because the original aircraft author and painter took his/her bitmap with the paintjob on it and converted it, probably to a DXT format which FS can read. Likely they used DXTBMP for this simple conversion. Now, once you've downloaded and installed DXTBMP (easy), you use it to open up the black or white bitmap as a normal bitmap again, and now you should be able to see the paint job for the aircraft...if you chose the right bitmap to open, some of those maps may be interior textures, or pilot textures, etc. Once you have the plane's paint scheme bitmap open you can alter, or edit it with your own stuff. Then use DXTBMP to convert it back into the DXT format that you got it as. If you keep the EXACT same name for the bitmap and dump it in to your aircraft's 'texture' folder (backup the original, renamed), then your work should show up on the plane when you fire up the sim.
This is a VERY basic description of one method used to do repaints.
There is payware software available from a company called 'Abacus', called FSrepaint or something similar that makes the process a little more foolproof, but it's just a bit of a learning curve and research sort of thing for most, I think....no need for such software to get the job done.
I don't do repaints, I make my own goofy aircraft and do the original artwork for them, so there are points I'm not clear on regarding REpainting stuff....like how do you tell which format (DXT1, DXT3, etc) the bitmap was saved as by the author originally.
One tip, you must close and reload FS before any changes you made will load up. You can't keep it open while working and then restart a flight to see your work..(as far as I know).
My best tip? GOOOOOOGLE the subject and grab a whack of tutorials on repainting aircraft for MSFS. Some folks around here may hook you up with some good links on the subject. All the info is out there....time to dive into the hobby and 'trial and error' 'til you're pulling your hair out...have fun!
http://forums.surclaro.com/ftopic9949.html ...Just saw this here, too. Already lots of info & links...lots more info on the 'net. Look hard and you'll probably find complete sites related to repainting FS aircraft.
At top of page under title block junk:
SEE Fltsim0?
slide doen slowly on that block f data.
Section to note: IS SIN=XXX
If this is a RAF Tristar, it will have an abbr, like:
Sim1=RAFStar or whatever.
Go to new textures ith config stuff to insert which tell about plane.
If it's SIM1= SAME as your first pick, OK!
Just make sure ALL data is same on both cfg's SIM1= is critcal! That tags the cfg sheet to the jet with sim1, check new texures, IF DATA SAME: OK. If different name , then the texturs will not work, The MODEL is of different size, etc.

I'm certain I have seen an RAF texture set for the Tri-star.
Hi Guys,
I have got as far as installing the RAF L-1011 in the aircraft folder but when I select the flying aircraft I have all the aircraft there but it is a plain colour with no markings .I put the new RAF texture in the aircraft folder and copied and pasted the new cfq file in the aircraft cfq file .Why doesn't it show properly. Beats me.
This is how the texures work, the first set are cut in the model. I know, I about bought the Cad program: $3,850> 3ds Max to finish the model myself and animate. Since the current mode of ours has no nav lights on wingtips, I have tried in vein to find a set of wings with them at least painted on.
ONLY Ito's F14D 2 texture pack. It works, BUT NOT UNTIL I changed all the config data to match the new textures, or vice-versa.
I have been using this method for years Rest peacefully
The textures are like gloves, one size does not fit all.
