I NEED THE DANG MODEL NUMBER on the label.

Tell me EXACT number & all other stuff on HDD info request.

I hate solving two problems when one is all that needs to be fixed. Drive that is. I am fixing the SATA and the IDE model ! So SPECIFY (please).

This info is RIGHT OUT OF MY HEAD, MY Microsoft Certified Systems Engineering tech books, my 30+ years PC/Aerospace Engineering experience and THE WEB at the Maxtor site.

Plus I already called two Eng. buddies still working there, sent them copies of this thread. Told me: press on, I am on the button.

It is YOU who must now understand all this stuff, do the fix.

THE SATA HOST ADAPTER on PCI IS IF you have a SATA, WHICH I STILL don't know what your drive model number is. I cannot go on without that info. PLEASE SUPPLY.

Everyone who has not taken ANY PC classes from MSFT or any college "AUTO ASSUMES" that the XP OS is BAD, the box is bad, buy this, fix that, REPLACE this & that. Reload this and that!

STOP!

Just KISS! ----------------Keep it simple Silly!

Install the drive, work the problem as it shows up.

STOP looking for excuses for this & that! they have been making the same format of HDD since 1985! Same jumpers, same DRIVE STRUCTURE! THIS STUFF YOU HAVE TO GET DOWN PAT!
It is PC101 in school.

YOU HAVE YET TO READ ANYTHING I put up in the links. IF YOU DID, you would be saying RIGHT ON MAN! IT BE Working! In 20 minutes!

GIVE ME the MAKE, YR, DATE of REV, REV NO. & BIOS NUMBER!

BIOS number (please tell me you know how to find the Number.

ON POST SCREEN AT Bottom LEFT!

PAUSE SCREEN at that POST step, write it down, rev #, DATE! I NEED THAT INFO to check on some things.

MOBO maker, model, p/n#, D.O.M., REV# Bought where, when?

IF THE BIOS is a PRE 2004 build, it might not be able to carry the 48 bit HDD sets. Regular HDD's below th 137 GB limit are 32 bit. anything above that, today's BIOS chips can handle the LARGER 137+GB, 48 bit size.

Since you are reading 232 Gb, IT MOST LIKELY a BIOS capable of 48 bit HDD's, thus 137 GB + size HD's (GUESSING DUE TO NO INFO!)

The SATA Host adapter is ON MOBO FIRST IF CAPABLE OF SATA! If not capable in regular BIOS, a PCI Controller car is used: called PCI SATA Host Controller Card, 25 bucks MAX.

PCI card that has a BIOS of it's own, OVERRIDING THE OLD BIOS! It stuffed into a PCI slot, the CONNECTOR is only 1" wide. You BYPASS the old BIOS, NOT USING Primary IDE Master Connector. This SETUP is for IF you have no PLUGIN on MOBO for SATA.

SATA is a 10 pin connector, small. Located on lower side of mobo is black or dark color, has o1-4 of them. IS SMALL 2X 5 pins (rows x column)arrangement.

Yours is using the 40/80 pin/conductor flat ribbon.

IT HAS TO BE A EIDE / UDMA-5 or -6. FIVE=5=ATA100.

Maxtor is one of the few HDD's left with the ATA UDMA-6: ATA133 (133Mb/s data transfer).

If you had a 133, THE ONLY Flats that would enable it to work at full speed have a HOLE THAT IS PLUGGED in the connectors. It is located near the "Keyed" slot. The connector will need this plugged to enable turbo-speed burst to attain & maintain the 133 data rate speed.

THAT WILL MAKE IT A ATA-133 Flex Cable. If you have that! GOOD! USE it. It is backwards compatable to -66 speed,.MSFT WHQL ok'd.
Industry Standard cable.

Now I think I have used up my cupboads! LOL. Smile

I hope you REALLY APPRECIATE THIS. THIS IS STILL my bread and butter work. This would have cost you no less than a C note. But at Surclaro, a Dr. Pepper will do, lol.

PLUS, if no one teaches YOU guys, who will carry the torch when we older guru's pass on? Yeah we are from the mid-late 60' era, so we are guru's lol Smile pass the dm pipe, Hendrix is playing!

I only tell you the cost of such TS (trouble shooting) DUE TO THE NATURE OF this business. IT is like getting your car fixed.

Let's use Groundsquirrel's standard "GM/FORD/Chrysler: Truck/Car Detroit Labor Cost Guide for Repairs" for fair wage costs. Which I certainly agree with:

1. YOU DID NOT TOUCH it, it is not working, fix= lowest cost
2. You MESSED with it = DOUBLE cost.
3. YOU BROKE IT WHILE MESSING WITH IT & WANT ME TO FIX=
Bring me your pink slip, get a huge loan: buy GS a NEW Bass Boat!
ME: a Year supply of DP!

Thanks GS for the use of your type of work in this example!

Let me know, things should fit together today! If you read & understand, ASK if you do not know. OK? I think this is excellent learning experience for EVERYONE. THIS PROBLEM is so prevalent during this BIOS transition phase, it will only do you well & serve to help all PC peoples.

You are not the first, won't be the last I have helped WITH THIS SAME ISSUE, even I went through it! MOST ALL OF US DO!

Tomcatdriver,
Steve,
NOW I go fly my Tomcat and DESTROY the enemy! HA HA!

You did not give me anything I needed except the model number. Finally!Answer these ?? HONESTLY! Did you read ANY LINK? Did you heed any thing I stated or did you just jack me around?

BECAUSE I AM P.O.!!! NOT POST OFFICE!

Kid, YOU ARE A KID! You will never EVER get me to help you again.

I ASKED YOU to get me the info. What do you do? YOU STILL DO NOT give me the info.

YOU NEVER EVEN SAID THANK YOU ! You blew me off like a fly!

THEN YOU WENT TO YOUR BROTHER's and it loaded XP fine? Even had right capacity? Which NUMBER! Binary or Decimal? Is in installed in unit?

I do not care if it got fixed at your house, my house, brothers house.
I was working it, YOU DID NOT WAIT. You just loaded it. Never even bothered to tell me.

It will read decimal: 186-187 GB in the bottom right of "Pie" window.
It will read BYTES in this Binary Capacity Measurement system.: 200,XXX,XXX,XXX BYTES in position RIGHT on top of pie.

BYTES are WHAT COUNTS!

Try uploading a file 100 MB is size in DECIMAL, Surclaro will kick it out!

IT MEANS 100,000,000 BYTES! BINARY! NOT 100 MB in DECIMAL!

You STILL may have a problem because the mobo has to have 133 IDE's!

You do not even know that or if cable is correct for ATA 133 (I told you already to look for this issue!), or if IDE primary controller in Device Mgr is reading correct UDMA!

Henceforth, go to your brother for help, whom I do not blame at all.

WHY DID YOU EVEN BOTHER THIS FORUM with your problem?

IS THIS WHAT I GET?

Like a toddler screaming, you need your sugar "tat" to shut the "hall" up.

What a waste of two great days of fishing!

Don't even think of flaming me!

You REALLY DISAPPOINTED ME & TICKED ME OFF TO THE MAX!

You are a sad sack!

I think my neighbor (bro-in-law) has one of those pci cards. I will just ask him for his. But i took my hard drive over to my brothers computer which is a lot older than mine and installed a fresh copy of windows xp perfectly with the correct size of the capacity.

DiamonMax 10
Model:6l200P0
200GB PATA133 HDD

(QUESTION) Why didnt you do that in the first place, why come on here and ask for help, and then when I see all the reams of text from Tomcatdriver, which incidently, is accurate, and now after all his work on your behalf, you mearly shrug it off, without even the slightest word of thanks to him at least.

I'm not surprised that he's Mad at you. (All take, And no give.)

Mel.

I agree '006. That being said, I just noticed his location in his bio panel, you can remain mad at him, but you still have to forgive him. He's in Alabama Rolling Eyes
