I was wondering, since I am going to buy my new gfx soon.... which setting would give me better performance?

ONE NVIDIA GeForce 8800 Ultra
or
TWO NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTX's in SLI?

I searched it up and I saw they have almost the same price!! Shocked

BTW.. I'm looking for an Ultra what has 650MHz core and 2,250MHz memory...

why do they all come in 612MHz core and 2,160MHz?

What about the 1x 8800 Ultra v.s. 2x 8800 GTX in SLI?

I attached some charts you might find useful. One chart lists many video cards and their performance with Battlefield 2142 at 1024x768. The other chart lists the same video cards at sli (or CF) mode at the same settings. There seems to be a minimal difference. Considering price, power usage, and future games, I would choose the 8800 Ultra.

This is only my opinion, but I'd say opt for the 8800 Ultra.

The main reason I say that is amount of heat these babies pump out. My friend had his 8800 idle at an incredible 70 degrees C!! That's hitting somewhere around the 150-160 F range!! Two of them might seriously tax your computer's ability to cool itself effectively. Unless you have liquid cooling instead.... Cool

Also, I don't know how far apart the PCI-E slots are on your motherboard, but I do know that there have been some issues with people trying to put more than one of the 8800 series in their motherboard, and it wouldn't fit because they're too wide for more than one. Just make sure to check that out...

Thirdly- this isn't really too big of a deal, but it doesn't hurt mentioning it, but SLI only really gives you a 25% increase in performance. Might as well just overclock the 8800 Ultra.

Oh- one last thing- not all games can take advantage of SLI technology yet. Make sure to check up on that, or you may find yourself getting way less framerates than you expected.

You want to get a Kick@ss gfx card but can your processor keep up with it? If it can't then why spend the money on it? I would wait about 4-6 months and upgrade you whole system using the new AMD Phenom QUAD-core CPU.

Is quad-core really all that important??

I mean, there really isn't anything out there that needs that kind of power, or could even take advantage of it.

And I don't know how expensive it's supposed to be, but if Intel's quad-core chip already out is any indicator, then AMD's is going to be a majorly overpriced item for a while.

No offense, but I think I'll stick with dual-core for right now.

Who cares, if he doesn't have a system that could support the full power of the graphics card why get it? Also the Phemons will be in dual core too. I don't know the rest of his specs but the graphics card may only be one restraint of performance.
Also it is kinda like saying "Is DX10 really important right now?" Answer not really since it is not out and most people don't even have/know about Vista. Point is it will be useful because of more programs being multi-threaded.

It's true what you say- I can't argue with that, but I don't know if just anyone can drop practically one thousand bucks for a processor!! At least, I know I sure as hell can't afford that!!! Laughing

How much would you say the performance is decreased by not having quad-core?

I just got this brand new piece of technology delivered just yesterday!! Very Happy

After waiting exactly a year..... I finally got it. An XFX GeForce 8800 Ultra Cool

!!!!

The only problem now is... my PS, which is just 300W, lol
Need to upgrade to 650 or more.

Once that is done, I'll share the immense gaming experience with all you guys Cool

next is PS, then RAM, then maybe a new Processor. But I prefer the Intel Core 2 Quad QX6800 Smile

AMD has prices too high for less performance.. just my opinion.
