Ok... here's a head scratcher. I was running fine on my P4 1.8, 1 Gig ram, Nvidia 4600, system averaging 20FPS. Loaded a couple of scenery add-ons and a sound set. Next thing I know I can barely get 2FPS! I removed the add-ons.. no luck. Rebooted the program... no luck. Turned all display attibutes to minimum... no luck. Reduced FPS to 5.... no luck. Tried different aircraft, airports, weather... no luck.
This has happen twice. My only remedy was to delete everything and start from scratch. Anybody out there seen this before? Any suggestsions as I am getting leary to add anything these days.
HI there.
Same thing has happened to me. I am running a system similar to yours but with a GeForce4 MX420 video card. I was getting anywhere from 30-50fps. Then I went and downloaded some scenery files and now FS2002 is like a slide show averaging about 5fps. This is with all settings at minimum. If you find out what has gone wrong and how to fix it without reinstalling, please let me know.
Thanks,
Michael.
Well, I couldn't discover an answer so I had to re-install from scratch. One nice thing... the reinstall retained all my aircraft add-ons so I was lucky. I also use FlightSim-Add On Manager which has all my aircraft, sounds, panels & scenery stored so I was ableto easily get everything back to where it ws.
Funny... I reloaded the same scenery (all but one... El Toro marine base in California), which appeared to cause the problem and now they are working great?!? So perhaps it was un related...
The following is an extract from the instructions for "El toro" scenery add-on created by Bill Melichar. Take note on using the scenery in conjunction with some add-on aicrafts.

Running the scenery:
This scenery was created using Airport 2.6, and is extremely dense, especially around the main terminal area. In order to create the main terminal area I used buildings inside of buildings, which creates the architecture I was looking for, but also adds a great deal, bringing frame rates almost to a hault. To compensate for this, the scenery has three levels which it can be run at. You must go to your Options, then Settings, and then Display. In Display you will see a slider for Scenery Complexity. Use the slider for best results. The following settings are recommended for using this scenery.
1. Very Dense= This setting will give you everything that I put into the design, all the static aircraft, the roads, parking structures, landscaping, and reflecting pools inside the main terminal area. Beware, at this setting frame rates are extremely jumpy, and I would not recommend it for landing or taking off, unless you have some type of super computer. This setting should only be used if you want to see everything around the main terminal area.
2. Dense= This setting will give you most of the static aircraft, and service vehicles, but will eliminate almost everything on the inside of the airport, which results in better frame rates. At this setting you will be able to see almost everything that is there on the airport side, including the hotel which is also very visible from the airport side. In testing I was able to taxi, take off, and land satisfactory, with a minimum of jer.
3. Normal= This setting will give you visually the entire airport, but will eliminate most of the static aircraft, and service vehicles, and will reduce the number of buildings in other areas away from the main terminals. This is the best setting for flying the airport, and will give you very smooth landings, take offs, and taxiing even around the main terminal.
The type of aircraft you are flying will also help or hinder the frame rates. I got good results with the default FS aircraft, but when using custom highly textured aircraft with ultra cockpits, I could hardly move in the Very Dense mode. I will most likely come out with a future follow up to this scenery with less dense terminal structures in the near future. I had to leave out many features I wanted to include in this scenery such as tarmac lines, and docking aparatus, but if I added anything else, I think the frame rates would have gone to 0. Hope you enjoy this airport, and hopefully it will really get built in the future!

For your input. Yes I read the warning about framerates before I installed. I fugured it couldn't be any worse than one of say SimFlyers big Airports like LAX or Dallas. With "Very Dense " maxed out I get 5-6 FPS at those.
But funny thing is, I never actually started at El Toro in any of my flights when the FPS dropped to 1.1. I tried a few default FS2002 airports like Santa Barbra and Lake Tahoe but still only got "still photos"!
Come to think of it... the program may have done this the first time as well when I loaded EL Toro... mmmm. I might have to stay away from that add-on though no ill feelings to the developer. It just may be whatever my PC/game configuration is may not be compatible with that add-on for whatever reason.
Make sure you defrag your hard drive first, and then set settings at default. This will set your PC to the default of your cards capabilites.
I too have GForce4 MX420 and I do just fine.
Also watch your clouds, don't use to many. And don't regulate your frames, I have mine set at default which is 30 and the game runs fine.
Definitely sounds like scenery files. A lot of that stuff is terrible on the
fps. Plus maybe some of the files your are adding are not completely
compatable with your sim.
