Is this a request for a effect?
I don't know that it can be done, inside the Sim. All the Screen shots that I know of have been altered to add it.
If it is a request it needs to be moved into the effects forum. I'll leave it be for now.

| Looks to me to be a request for a heat shimmer effect like in the .jpg, ...yeah, I think you either put up with a really thinned out smoke effect in the sim or you photoshop it in afterwards. There was just a brief discussion around here recently...I think it was Mel who had a washed-out smoke effect looking pretty good as 'heat shimmer' in one of his screenshots. If I find the post I'll slap it up here.

| Hi Guys, I think Mel's was for Rain Spray. I down loaded and installed a heat shimmy effect but it was so insipid that it could hardly be seen .Art

| There are some heat shimmer effects available that were attempted some time ago. I dont know if anybody has tried to refine them lately. There are three files here in our library and many more at the other major flight sim sites. Just use "heat shimmer" for your search and then decide for yourself on the approach you wish to use. Some of them use the lights section, which has the disadvantage of disabling certain custom lighting effects on different addons. Others use the sound section. When they came out I tried them, and I will admit that with careful installation they do look quite good for the available technology of Fs9. However, back then I had a somewhat more limited machine and they slowed my frames to a very dramatic slide show.

I dont know if it is the right thing you are looking for, but I have an "engine heat @ 10%" that causes a "shimmer" effect as that in the picture you provided. It came with an F-14 Tomcat by our very own MR Steve Hinson (i presume original was by Dino Cateano --sp?) IF you would like this craft, OR the effect/guage that causes it, click the EMAIL button below and send me a message with a subject of ENGINE HEAT GUAGE and I will get back to you in just a day or 2 with the files and instructions on how to install it.
keep in mind that this "shimmer" is NOT a constant shimmer, but that it just shows up briefly 1~2 seconds then goes away.

Have to jump in at this point....... Heat shimmer is available as a download, I have applied it to my F-16, and it works pretty well.
Yes, Rain Spray was another effect I have, but not to be confused with this one
@capt.P this is a constant shimmer effect at low to mid throttle, it's there all the time, I will try and track down where I got it from...... As RD pointed out a little while back, all it is, is a thinned down smoke effect.... but it's as close as I think you will get.
Here is my vid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P55LpQf68k4
And yes......... This does need to be moved to the effects forum.

| I'll bet that a smoke effect could be further tweaked with care and a better shimmer effect could be achieved. The bitmaps can be renamed and played with too, and just a bitmap alteration can possibly make a large difference without too much foolin' with the text files parameters. Seems to be a pretty coveted effect, should be interesting to see if anyone ever improves what's out there now into a real 'hit' of a heat shimmer effect.

I'm still debating whether or not to spend the time to make a good one.
Thinking more about it, if I did, what you all be willing to spend on it???

I am pretty certain it was this one http://www.simviation.com/fs2004military6.htm
Bottom of the page..
But I remember now seeing it, for the F-16 only, that explains why I have on only one fighter.
I think some of us need to go into the Ice Cream making business. Hint.

lock on has a really good heat shimmer style effect thing.
if there was a way of importing it into flight sim by means of file manipulation...
just a thought
