Here I am trying to build up a new system on paper and I have been out of building systems since CPU'*beep* the 1 GB barrier.
Here is what I am trying to see/figure out it things will work and play well together:
Motherboard:
ASUS Striker Extreme
Link to manufacturer site: http://usa.asus.com/products.aspx?l1=3&l2=11&l3=397&l4=0&model=1439&modelmenu=1
Link for cheapest price: http://www.mwave.com/mwave/DeepSearch.hmx?scriteria=Striker+Extreme&ALL=y&TP=1
Board specification states that it can support up to 800 MHz DDR2 memory.
Does that "mean" that it can not support higher speed memory? I notice that Kingston for example, has HyperX DDR2 (PC2-6400) that runs at 800 MHz but they also have DDR2 (PC2-9600) in that same HyperX line and it runs at 1.2 GHz. Some of the differences are SLi vs non-SLi and the voltages are increased for the 1.2. As well as CL4 Vs CL5 and I have no idea what that is, suspect it has something to do with cache though.
Video Card(s):
Nvidia GeForce 8800 Ultra
I know this is everyones dream gaming video card for the unlimited budget, but I don't plan to use this machine for games in a purpose designed system type of stance.
Link to a price burn down site:

I plan to transfer my existing HDD to this system as the #1 drive.
I will probably go with a Sound Blaster Sound card as well.
Does anyone see any potential problems with this build so far?
I can configure and buy this off the shelf from Alienware but I need to do the research and really understand what I am going to be building or buying.
Thanks folks. I appreciate the input. |

| Hmmm, I dont see any hardware conflict with this combo. A careful read reveals that the fsb is 1066 capable, and DDR2 can tolerate all the zap you can give it. I'm still not convinced that we shouldnt be running external power supplies though as we approach these memory and fsb speeds. |

This board has many advanced overclocking features. By overclocking the memory, you would be able to use DDR2-1066 (or faster) RAM.
Are you willing to wait for the new Intel Penryn series? They will be released on January 2008. If not, what kind of CPU do you want to use along with that monster machine of yours? |

| AMD Phenom, the "true" quad core CPU's. They should be released by the holidays. |

That is good to know for the memory. Please provide link for Penryn unless it is available on Intel's site.
As far as the chip, there is no real hurry. But what I plan is the QX6850, not really sure that the extra $200.00 average is worth the small upgrade in speed over the QX6800.
But like I said, last time I built a system 1GHz chips were brand new to the market and RAM was the price limiting factor. I didn't know until I started this that the CPU's had gone pinless...
I'm looking into a +1000 watt SLi power supply as well. |

Thanks, sir. Appreciate it..
But saw this | Quote: | | The Penryn chips are the first iteration of the new manufacturing strategy outlined by Otellini earlier this year. Intel wants to introduce new chip microarchitectures and manufacturing technologies on a regular two-year cadence, which the company refers to as the "tick-tock" strategy. |
I thinks this equals "pay to play, junk after two years" as in leaps and bounds goes. From a tech stand point I couldn't be happier, from a consumer standpoint... I couldn't be angrier!
Tick this chip, Tock your tech, and stick it up your smock! |

| I think their tick has just about tocked anyway. Very soon technology will no longer be able to keep the doubling advantage every eighteen months or so. Once layers get to 5 atoms we're gonna need a whole new substrate to move forward. |

Now I'm down to having to run numbers for total watts required by the system and choosing the memory to set the value for the watts required.
I was just thinking that I would get a 1,000 Watt PSU and call it good, but I need to run the numbers on it to be sure that I am not wasting money by going that high if a 850 watt will give me the 30% overage I am looking for under full extreme load. This used to be a lot simpler when I understood everything.
Now to cases, The MB is a std ATX, the Graphics "cards" are going to be Nvidia GeForce 8800 Ultra.
I have been looking at the Gigabyte Mercury case, it comes hooked up with water cooling and that is probably a plus, also been looking at other Gigabyte cases. But if you all have some other ideas I am open to suggestions. |

Don't forget your addons that need power also.
Stay with the 1,000 watter, you'll never notice the extra cash missing until you start having brown outs.

Haven't you heard about quantum and DNA computers?? The problem with computers today is that everything is single computing- even when you have dual-core, every command is executed in a line- the first command in the line gets computed first, then the next one, then the next one.
DNA and quantum computers have the ability to do parallel computing- doing two commands (or conceivably more- depending on the needs) so that problems that take hours or days now- later could take minutes or seconds. |

I think that's one of the best statements I've ever heard- that and the nerdy pickup line - "You turn my floppy disk into a hard drive." |
