Probe after planes collide at Heathrow
An investigation has been launched after two aircraft collided at Heathrow Airport while taxiing to take-off on the runway.

The planes, including a British Airways Boeing 747 to Singapore and a Sri Lankan Airlines Airbus A340, collided on Monday night.

A witness aboard the Sri Lankan flight, which was carrying 286 passengers and crew, said her plane hit the BA aircraft from behind while manoeuvring on the runway.

Danish journalist Annasofie Flamand, 32, said: "We turned our wing, almost hit what looked like the tail end of the British Airways flight, and we ended up chopping off a bit of wing...It cut through it like butter.

"It's pretty incredible to see something like that in a place like Heathrow Airport. Thank God it was on the ground and not in the air."

A BA spokesman described the incident on flight BA011 as a "minor collision", adding that no-one was injured and an investigation had been launched.

The spokesman said: "Our aircraft had a minor collision with another aircraft in the taxiways. Engineers are inspecting the aircraft to ascertain the damage.

"The passengers have been offloaded and returned to the terminal building. We do not have any more precise details of the collision while it is being investigated."

The passengers were given the option of a refund or to spend the night in a hotel before leaving on the next available flight.

A Singapore Airlines spokeswoman said: "SriLankan Airlines reported a minor incident involving a British Airways aircraft when taxiing to the runway at the London Heathrow airport at 8.44pm on Monday night.

"It is reported that the wing tips of the two aircraft brushed against each other while taxiing.

"No injuries were reported to any of the 286 passengers and crew on board the flight from London via Male to Colombo.

"All passengers have been transferred to city hotels until alternate travel arrangements are made during the course of the day."

Heathrow claims to be the world's busiest international airport, handling more than 67 million passengers a year.
