Dear Forum Members,
I am starting a VA, The Russian Knights Virtual Display Team.
I saw in someone else's post that you can get into some legal issues if you use someone's paint markings et cetera. Does anyone know if I can get in trouble for using The Russian Knights paint scheme and markings?
Thank you very much,
SU37Berkut

if there is a REAL Russian Knights Display Team, then without actually contacting them and telling them of your intentions or wishes to use their NAME(s), design, call signs, or any other likeness that could be easily traced back to them.... then yes it is illegal to use.
However... if you contact them and tell them what you want to do, how you want to do it, and why... and they give you permission then HAVE FUN. |

Thank you Captainpropwash,
There is a real Russian Knights Display Team.
I do not know how to contact them as their site is in russian.
So I guess that blows it.
Too bad.
Thanks for the information,

| Just contact the nearest Russian consulate and speak to the ambassador in charge, I am sure he/she can be of assistance. |

Just as a footnote, if they do not want virtual representations of themselves as do some other organizations (Westjet I believe?) then it is even more imperative that you do not go ahead with the venture, or legal consequences will most likely follow.

Thank you all, I think I will just forget about it. Don't want any international issues. |

| Why? It's not as though they are a commercial enterprise and you represent some kind of economic competition. My experience with most aerial demonstration teams is that they truly appreciate their fans. You might be pleasantly surprised at the reception your idea gets. |

| on a slight side thought, if you would like to continue with the thought of putting together a Russian display team, partially based on the Russian Knights.... you could do something like the Russian Aerobattic Display Team (RADT) ... could come up with an almost similar paint scheme to the Knights, but just a little different, and then you would retain all "rights" and legalities. Noone is infringed on, and no one is being coppied. Totally Legit. ... just a thought, might work, might not. |

Dont let a little thing like the Russians put you off, ask, and they may surprise you...... If they dont want to play ball, then make your own variation.

| You know you could also hit up the guys at Alphasim, they have a Su-27 in the Knights paint scheme. I'm sure they know how to get permission. |

That will not work. Having a paint available is one thing. To create a VA of something real needs to have permission. Especially if your going to mirror every aspect of it.

If your in it just for fun, not as much as to model a real organization, do what I am trying to do a couple posts below this one. *beep* plane (can still be the SU-27) and find a couple buddies and go flying. Much simple that modeling a real team, and in ways more fun since it's yours and you can modify it as you want.

Thank you all for the encouragements and advice,
I would rather not get involved with foreign countries.
Mel, if you read this, could you please delete my thread called Russian Knights?
EDIT: I will take advice from the other mods on your request. Mel.
Thank you very much.
SU37Berkut
P.S. I think I will just remain a fan. |
