Hi Folks,

I have an ASUS A8V MoBo and am going to upgrade.

I want to retain my existing HD.

I have read some threads that indicate that if I stay with an ASUS board (say ASUS P5K SE) I won't have to re-load windows XP and can simply fit the new MoBo and components and boot up.

Is this true as it would save a lot of hassle?

Second question, will my existing 450W PSU be sufficient? My wish list is as follows:

PNY GeForce 8800 GTS 640
Intel Core2 quad Q6600 socket 775
ASUS P5K SE
2xOCZ Reaper HPC Edition 2Go DDR2
Cooler Akasa AK-965

I'm a bit confused by your statement. Why would you have to reinstall Windows just because you changed your mobo? I swapped my hard drive over to a new system and all that was required was to register the new mobo signature with Microsoft. The guy at the PC store told me my system would quit in six months if I tried to just hook my drive/system up to the new machine.........he was wrong. You will have a couple of issues with getting a few machine level address things straightened out during your first few updates, but they are just minor annoyances and I havent had any problems at all. As to the power supply, I am running a 450w on a P4-3ghz, 1g-ram with an ati-9600xt128. For your anticipated power levels I would recommend a 600w to keep from overworking the power supply, especially as you will probably be adding memory and hard drives to that beast before you know it.

Thanks for that.

I am getting confused messages from various sources. Some say I will certainly have to re-load windows as I am going from AMD to Intel others say not. Some say they have not encountered any problems at all while others say they had difficulties.

I am going to give it a go without a re-load and if I have to do it then so be it. I will of course back up what I can on my second HDD.

Personally, I would re-install Windows. I think your chances of it working out right with no lingering future problems are near zero.
But go ahead and try it if you like.

I've done 3 MoBo swaps, alone. No other changes.

Windows never had to be re-installed on any of them. The only thing that needed to be done, was find updates for each MoBo, and a couple timing resets. None of which caused any problems with games, programs, and Windows itself.

However, going from AMD to Intel, might have a couple twists in it. I honestly don't think you will have any problems though.

I've swapped mobo's as well. The worst I had to face was a repair install of Windows XP so it would recognize all of my hardware (yeah, and then all of the updates. This will be the ONLY time you'll be thankful for the automatic updates feature). Remember to install the mobo drivers for the specific board as well. Then Microsoft will come "calling". Just say you want to activate the OS. You do not need to register it again. Then it's smooth skies!!!

ps. Here's a kinda neat little tool to find out what psu you might need. http://www.extreme.outervision.com/index.jsp. Then you also might want to check out http://www.techarp.com/freebog.aspx to get some idea of what to do with your bios settings. Have fun!!!
