You have to fly the airplane you know. Rolling Eyes In real life, pilots are first trained to fly the ILS manually. I hear about this AP ILS hold button all the time. Learn to fly the ILS APR your self. Its not as hard as you might think. Just dont over correct, and practice alot, thats all.

In my view, landing the plane is one of the best features of the game and using the AP APPR setting makes it too simple. Fly the Private Pilots lesson on ILS approach and practice it a lot. Flying an ILS approach manually with low visibility is great fun and requires you to concentrate a lot more.

I'm working my ILS manual approaches up through plane size. So far i'm up to the Learjet.

try and follow this

i use teeside UK from my departure

and newcastle for arrival

in your NAV1 box tune 111.50

NAV2 tune VOR 114.25

make sure you have the little white lights on the radiobox on nav1 nav2 and dme.

request IFR deprt

climb 4000ft use AP with HDG-IAS set to 210 max for a 737 ALT 4000ft

when your glide slope becomes active click NAV and follow ATC till decends you or clears you on ILS usually 2600ft RWY 07 for me.

reduce speed to 170KNTs to capture GS

when your HDG light goes out and your 7-8 nm's away from airport

hit APP and reduce your speed to 130 for landing full flap or there abouts.

thats what i do....

hope it works.

Hi guys and gals, just a quick thx from this novice pilot. I've just discovered this site having just been given fs2002. This landing lesson is superb and I look forward to learning so much more from this site.

Cheers,

Stuart

Hi CrazyStu, nice to have you here. I'm running FS2002 as well and I'm having a blast. Enjoy Surclaro, I was lucky to find this site early in my simming quests too. Smile

so, in summary:

Make a flight plan from X to Y

Take off and follow ATC instructions

When ATC says something along the lines of "until established on localizer" hit nav1 , dme and adf frequencies in and you shuld hear sounds

then, this is where I get confused, but if I hit APR, my plane goes wild, but I'm not sure when to hit approach mode. I also punch in my final heading into CRS, does that have anything to do with it?

just to mention it again... when doing ILS approaches... when flying AutoPilot: once you call "in range" about 20-25 miles out... select APPR on the Auto Pilot panel, and just before touchdown... TURN OFF AUTOPILOT, decrease your speed to IDLE, and flare the nose up just a bit... the plane will / should establish itself on the Localizer.

"Keeping it really simple, for runway approach, simple way to do is establish altitude and heading as directed by tower, and once you can see the runway lights at a distance, you are straight and level - hit APPR (approach). Now your tower will take over landing...it will guide your aircraft straight on to the runway and even establish your descent... Of course, you gotta alighn a bit urself, turn off AP and AT just before touchdown and flare!"
