Are you running Windows or Vista 64bit???? It does make a difference. As Vista in 32bit, is equal to Windows.

I'm running the 32-bit version of Vista.
Also, could you rephrase your previous statement? I don't really understand what you mean by "32-bit equaling to Windows." Thanks. |

| 32 Bit Vista is equal to Win XP... Different code, output near similar... But crappier? |

Are you serious?! Then why am I able to play DX10 games on my 32-bit Vista OS?
I have a 64-bit capable processor, but only have 2GB of RAM, which isn't really adequate for a 64-bit OS. |

XP is only similar up till you mention DX10, no support is in XP. Vista is the requirement then. Not a blanket statement...
Apples and Oranges at that point... Good thing you studying to an Engineer
RD will come by and probably pile drive me into the ground on this. |

@ Cat1... Nah, too sick to pile drive air into a glass right now.
But otherwise, your right. Vista 32 bit is the same as Windows XP. The only difference is the coding. Hence DX10 will work with V-32b, and not W-XP.
Remember, they key word here is VISTA. Gotta have it to run DX10.
If it wasn't for the shaders, then there really is no reason why they couldn't have made DX10 compatible with XP, but that's a different story.
Basically you can run DX10 because you have Vista. However, the output would be the same as XP. Hence the 32bit. In 64bit, (CPU not dependent) it will double the output, and include the mysteries of the true output of DX10.
Hope that makes sense.

OK. Thanks for the info RD. I will try the 64-bit version of Vista when I get a chance. Currently, most of my computer's hardware doesn't support 64-bit, so I might run into several problems. For now, I'm going to install FSX on my so-called "new Windows XP" (Vista 32-bit) and look for any improvements with DX10.
And that means reinstalling all of my add-ons. Ugh! |

Sooo, how did it turn out for you. I am really interested to see if you had any improvements, while still in 32 bit mode.

I am running Vista Ultimate 32 bit, and I must admit when I switch on the DX10 preview FSX does run a lot smoother, improved frame rates etc.
SP2 has helped the overall experience of FSX, but DX10 pushes it still further.
My system specs are
3.67mhz 6850 Quad core Intel
4GB Ram
Dual 768mb 8800 GTX cards |

Wow. Good timing RD. I just got FSX SP2 installed on Vista 32-bit with all my add-ons and whatnot. I did notice an improvement (not significant, though) in framerates and overall performance after DX10 was enabled. I haven't had much time to observe the new graphics engine and compare it to DX9. Besides, I'm not expecting much.
My system specs are in my signature.
Noddy, besides frame rate improvement, do you see any stunning difference in picture quality?
EDIT: One thing that really struck me was how the clouds actually hid the sun and caused shadows! It could just be a mere illusion. As always, correct me if I am wrong. |

You probably saw right. Welcome to the new world of shaders, and what they can do to the environment, and reality viewing.

How does one "enable" DX-10 in FSX?

I just built a new rig especially for FSX Deluxe (see specs below). I haven't announced before today because I wanted to make sure that all components fell in love with each other. So far that seems to be the case and I'm all goose-pimply over it!
Right out of the gate, I can see that there's gonna be a bit of a learning curve with Vista, but that's half the fun....right?
Same can also be said for FSX. I'm a babe in the big bad woods at this point, but again...having huge doses of fun with it. At times like these, there just aren't enough leisure hours in the day. So you can be sure that I'll be reinvigorating the FSX thread post haste!
I was a bit alarmed to read RD's post that 32 bit Vista platforms can't take full advantage of all that DX10 has to offer. Jeez, I wish I had known that a few weeks ago! Oh well, I'm getting all the frame rates I can handle at 1/2 settings and tweaking upward and onward to find the "sweet spot".
So, to answer your question RD "do I have FSX?" YES!
Now how do you "liven up DX10" in FSX? So far I haven't come across any such menu prompt. But as I said, I'm still a babe in the woods
