Found this little jewel whilst perusing the Cnet site today. A really great little discussion about svchost.exe and a nice utility called Process Explorer that can help sort out processor slowdowns.

I had this exact problem before, when I had my Dell desktop:

Seems like it was a common problem during Spring 2007. After switching to my custom-built computer, I no longer experienced this problem. But it seems the problem still persists on many computers today.

Sigh...Windows Update...
