I'm just days out from slapping together a new Vista/DX10/FSX system that I'm hoping will carry me far, far, far into the future.
My question goes like this....
Once I've installed Vista Home Premium (updates, et, al), and after installing DX10 on the new sys, can I.....
Run both FS9 and FSX from the same C:/ drive (under DX10)?
If not, is there a work around?
Until I've tamed Vista and have it generally under my command, I am going to keep my Windows XP Prof system online and networked side by side as a solid backup. Wireless laptop as a backup/backup
RAMBLING: Jeez, historically, I've always been among the first of my crowd to jump on a new Windows OS. The jump from 3.1 to 95 was a HUGE but very welcome leap!
The leap from 95 to 98 was a gimme! Bring it on! Those were the good ol' days!
But there was something about Windows 2,000 and Millenium that I could never quite put my finger on! Because my good ol' Windows 98 was serving me so flawlessly, I flat out skipped both of those OS's and held good ol' '98 close to my chest.
But when XP came out, I jumped onto that puppy like a MOFO, and the move has been onf of the best I've ever made. The best Microsoft Platform I've ever known! System Recovery!
But the leap to Vista scares the hell out of me! I liken all of this to jumping from one little patch of floating ice to another patch of ice (perhaps less stable than the last)! My desire is to move forward and embrace the technology. But my guts are all upside down, just the same as they were over 2,000 and Millenium!
I've had a few encounters with Vista Home Premium and was really surprised to see no changes to Windows Paint! They really dropped the ball here. By now there should be a professional and basic version of MS Paint!
Nuff said!

First of all, I don't think much has been done to MSFT Paint over the years....
Now, onto your question. Installing Vista will automatically install DX10. So you don't have to worry about installing it separately.
You can install FS9 and FSX on the same hard drive. SP2 and the Acceleration Pack for FSX both feature the DX10 preview. But if you don't have a DX10-compatible video card, it's not possible to enable this feature. I believe DX10 is still premature technology. At this point, FSX along with DX10 features looks very similar to FS9, at least to my eyes, hence the name DX10 "preview." I look forward to improvements in the FSX-DX10 world.
Good luck with upgrading! The best part about this is simply working with a brand-new computer!

One note of caution with FSX. You only need either the SP2 or the Acceleration Pack to get the benefits of DX10. Do not install both of them.

Well, that's a bit of a conundrum.
Is one more beneficial than the other?

| Yes. You get your money's worth. SP2 is free while Acceleration costs. They both feature the DX10 preview. If this is all you are looking for, I would suggest downloading SP2. If you are willing to experience new planes, missions, and other new features, you can purchase the Acceleration. Like RD said, if you decide to purchase and install Acceleration, DO NOT install SP2.

I am trying to install the FS9 Maddie Beech from my XP machine into FSX on my Vista machine, and not having very good luck.
Obviously, FSX/Vista is going to be a whole new learning curve for me. As we all know, the Maddie Beech comes as a self executing install for FS9. I've taken Mel's advice and installed it to a folder on my Vista desktop and then copied and pasted all files into FSX manually. But, not surprisingly, I must have done something wrong somewhere, somehow!
1. In the aircraft selection screen, I see two versions of the Maddie (cabin and no cabin), but the thumbnail doesn't represent GS's repainted Maddie (see screenshot).
2. In the virtual cockpit, there are no gauges or textures (see screenshot).
3. In the Spot View, there are none of GS's repaint textures or tires visible (see screenshot).
4. For your consideration, I've also attached a screenie of my FSX file heirarchy.
For those of you who have mastered both versions of FS and XP -vs- Vista....your thoughts, advice, help, assistance, guidance very much appreciated. Pointed follow up questions ok. Just no pointy objects, please!

Wait... They didn't tell ya?
Paint and tires cost extra in FSX....
I have no idea Bruce, wish I could help.

| I moved my Kingair 300 folder over to simobjects/airplanes. Then I copied the ka300_*** labeled effects files over to fsx/effects. started fsx up and while it's true that thumbnails are needed for the selection menu, I did not have any problems with the big beech showing up in the sim just fine, including cabin and cockpit. From what I see in that last screenie, you need to cut/paste the effects over to the main effects folder and delete the empty effects folder from within the aircraft's folder. If you have the Fs9 Maddie, just copy over the aircraft folder contents to your fsx airplane folder for the maddie or just delete the fsx maddie folder and copy over the Fs9 maddie folder. anyway. you. get. the . idea. . .

Yep, worked just fine for me on my Vista rig. No problems, except I need to make a thumbnail for it. But it all works fine.
Do as GS suggested, and you should be fine. If not, let me know, and I'll zip one up for you to install easier.
Let me know. OK

After four attempts and four failures, always with the very same results, I'm at wits end.
When you have a moment RD, I'll definitely take you up on your offer to zip up an FSX ready copy, and we'll see where that gets us.
Thanks very much!

You're not running in dx10 mode are you?
The textures were made in dx9 days.

| Looks like DX10 is enabled, if untick and restart FSX it will go back to DX9 and the textures will show.

Hey Guys!
I'm back! I haven't been here in a while as I stopped playing FSX. (not enough graphics support on my computer, was slowing the whole thing down till it wasn't any fun.)
@Jaeg-
I seem to remember somebody somewhere saying you needed a 64 bit OS to use DX 10. I never found a check box or anything like it to turn it on or off either. (I have a 32 bit OS so maybe it doesn't show?)
Also, I think Fokker can help you with the how to's of getting FS9 files to work in FSX. (He always got 'em working for me.)
Cheers!
SU37Berkut
BTW, it's nice to be back.
