Every time I've ever seen a photo of the lush, green Scottish highlands I've been kind of awestruck. The geography over there almost makes your stomach flutter. So I finally realized it would be a great idea to fly around Scotland and see what the default terrain mesh and textures offered up. Into 'Location' I go in FS to select Scotland....and I can't find it in 'Country/Region'.
Instant Google results inform this geographically-challenged Canuck that Scotland is indeed a part of Great Britain. I did not know that.
Neat when you actually learn other-than-aviation stuff from a flight simulator.
Anybody know the best airports to fly from in Scotland in order to see the best geography? (I'll do some flying around and post back if I get great views from a particular airport.)
Mel, you folks sure have some beautiful territory 'cross the pond.

Well, I just took off from the default starting position at Glasgow and hung a left. Oh, and I forgot - although my terrain mesh is default, I have Lennart's textures in. (Freeware )

Right on, thanks Mel, I'll enjoy some of your starting airports tonight, and have a look around where you suggested as well. Hmmm...I remember my Mom saying 30 years ago that we had some Welsh blood in our family. Maybe our ancestors were neighbours.

right guys.. heres some info from a real true Scot!
the best airport to fly from to then take you through the valleys and lochs of Scotland would be Inverness..(after takeoff head south and over or through the mountains)
however, instead EGQL(RAF Leuchars) offers a good sortie upto RAF Lossiemouth or Kinloss -- youll have to look them up in FS.
Or... For the longest runway in Scotland try flying from Campbelltown.
The most fun thing to do is maybe fly from RAF Valley in Wales in a fast jet trainer, then up the coast past Glasgow, across around Campelltown (MOD Machrihanish) and then up the peninsula through Loch Crinan and the through the valleys comming out to land at Lossiemouth, or circling round to RAF Leuchars.
Or... Fly a turboprop such as the shorts tucano from RAFC Cranwell or RAF Valley the same route but head from the highlands into Dundee (EGPN) - which they do occasionally with them and C130 aircraft.
just a few suggestions, some which i have seen and flown for real myself a few times.
ENJOY!!!

We certainly do! But I love what I've seen of Ontario too.
Advice from another Scot: If you want to improve the look of the default terrain, I highly recommend both Scotflight Scenery (fs2004) by Iain Gallacher and Edinburgh Xtreme (fs2004 and FSX) by UK2000 Scenery. Both payware but very accurate and entertaining. You can even have the New Year's fireworks over Edinburgh with one of Iain's freeware add-ons - available here on Surclaro. Edinburgh, Glasgow and Prestwick airports are available on Iain's freeware page too. Edinburgh Xtreme is more up to date however as it includes the more recent extension to the domestic departure area. I can vuch for it's accuracy as I fly out of it or collect my girlfriend from there at least once a month.
I'm always keen to add more accurate Scottish scenery though, so if anyone had any favourites, feel free to post them here, freeware and payware. Enjoy your Scottish adventures and "Haste ye back" (come back soon) as we traditionally (if not literally) say in Scotland! ,
