@ T-Fish, no problem. It happens.

@ GS, I know what your saying. And that could be an issue. But, if I remember right, the IDE that failed, was the master by cable, and the original SATA was jumped, or should have been jumpered to slave.

Now with no IDE's, I wonder if it makes a difference on which connector the master and slave SATA HD's, are connected to on the MB. I'll have my bro look into it. Heck, I may look into it as well, when I'm done here.

Thanks man, you brought up something that is obvious, but easily overlooked. And may well be part of the problem.

That may very well be the problem, the jumpers being in the wrong position.

Might want to check your BIOS as well to see what the BIOS has set. Some (in the past) were controlled by the BIOS as to if it was cable controlled, some MB's have jumpers on them too for the same thing.

One of the many, many magical things with SATA is that there's no such thing as Master and Slave anymore. It's dead. Gone. Connect your hard drive wherever you want.

If the hard drive is an original SATA drive and there are still places for jumpers, nothing should be there besides the pins themselves. No jumpers.

SATA ports are numbered, but that doesn't mean you have to use them in any particular order. For example, my DVD-RW uses SATA #2, while my hard drive uses SATA #6, since it was better wiring-wise to use that configuration.

If there are jumpers on your SATA drive, the only thing they do would be to limit to SATA 1.5 if your MB doesn't support autodetect or 3.0.

Otherwise, you can leave it as normal.

Thanks guys for the info. All has been forwarded to my bro, so he can get the headache. Cool

My CD and DVD RW's are IDE's.

I need to note this though. I did keep the original MB, and did not get a new MB. The one I have, is an a7n8x MB. It only has two slots for SATA hard drives, or peripherals, which isn't a problem as of now.

If I would have gotten the other/new one, I would have had to buy new CD and DVD RW's. Money wise, and not really needing to make a full on upgrade, I went this route.

When the snow starts flying, I may do a full on upgrade in Jan/Feb. But I am not sure if I will go with XP or VISTA as the OS. I still like having my XP.

I'm going to make a note here that before I ever used Vista, I was a Vista hater. All the way.

Now that I have installed Vista Ultimate 64-bit on my new rig, I like Vista. Many of the original bugs and problems that plagued Vista during launch and gave it its horrible reputation have been fixed in updates, and especially Service Pack 1. Also, in Vista, there are many new features that XP does not have that I really enjoy.

Plus, with Vista, you get DX10. You still may wring out a little more performance with XP, but I think that if your computer has the horsepower to run games in Vista, go for it.

Vista, with some tweaking, becomes easier to use. Particularly User Account Control (That's the thing notoriously touted for the repeated confirmations of almost everything you do). If you turn UAC off, alot of that goes away. Also, you can tweak many visual features to help you conserve system resources.

Exactly. Once UAC is dealt with, it's not bad at all. Plus, if you have the power, enabling all those visual goodies is awesome too.

I'm not sure if this would work, but it could be worth a shot.

You could try to download ubuntu (http://ubuntu.com). The download comes with a live CD. I have been able to see and view some files (this was a while ago) after windows was unable to boot. I'm not sure if this would work in your situation or not.

The download is pretty big (it's the size of a cd) so it might be best to download it over night.
