It may be obvious to some, but I would like to clear up an issue regarding the fan for the above, ......... Should it be drawing hot air away from the processor, or blowing cooler air onto it ?

Thanks

Mel.

Hey Mel, all the ones I've seen are suckers. Meaning they are pulling air in around the cooling media, and blowing/pushing it out.

Like above, the air should blow into the heatsink.

Doesn't terminology suck... Draw fan, pusher fan, suck fan, blow fan, intake fan, exhaust fan...

A short simple way to remember it...
If the heat source is below the fan, the fan is drawing/pulling air off the heat source. It is exhausting it into the surrounding air. Conductive/Convective cooling. Heat sync/fan

For the rest... Look here:

Hmmm...
My CPU fan seems to be "pulling" air down across the cooling fins.
I have no idea what I'm talking about.

Swish and puke?

Ok........... Lets put it this way, should I be sucking hot air away, as RD suggests, or blowing cooler air down onto the heat scource ?

My first thoughts were with RD, the fan should be sucking hot air away from the heat scource.

It really depends on your case circulation, heatsink type, etc.

My new rig is actually pushing air into the cooling fins of the CPU. My old one was a "puller", as it had a shield around it to pull cooler air in, as close as possible to the CPU and heatsink rods.

If you can take a pic of your heatsink on the CPU, it will be easy to tell whether you should have a pusher or puller, sucker or blower.

Again, fan blows INTO heatsink. If the heatsink is against the motherboard, fan blows towards the motherboard. If it is a tower heatsink, the fan BLOWS THROUGH the heatsink, it does not suck through the heatsink.

That is not 100% correct.

As said, if the there is a manifold/cover over the heatsinks on the CPU, the fan is usually set up to PULL the air around the heatsink and exit through the fan.

I, honestly, have yet to find such a heatsink.
Take a look around frostytech.com They always blow into the heatsink.

Almost all stock heatsink and performance air heatsinks have the fan blowing INTO the heatsink.

Again, see diagram. Second one is a performance 120mm heatpipe heatsink.

Frostytech reviews all kinds of heatsinks, stock and high performance coolers. You'll find that they all have fans blowing into the heatsink.

As a little test for you, look inside your computer. Does it blow in at the heatsink, or does it blow away from the motherboard? If it blows towards the motherboard, try turning it so it blows away from the motherboard. You'll find that your temps will go up at least 15C.

Like I said "Not all fans blow into the heatsink"

Otherwise, I am using this for cooling my CPU. Noctua NH-U12P SE1366 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835608007&nm_mc=OTC-Froogle&cm_mmc=OTC-Froogle-_-CPU+Cooling-_-Noctua-_-35608007
With the 3.5Ghz OC, and running prime95 in blended mode for two hours, my temp is stable at 66C.
