I am currently in the process of putting together my new 'monster' as well. Took a while, and some parts are on backorder still but by the time I get back from holidays (Sept. 20/04) they should all be here!!! Can't wait!!!

Specs:

Intel P4 3.4 LGA775
ASUS P5AD2 Mobo
4GB DDR Ram
120GB HD (programs)
60BG HD (XP Professional)
DVD/CD burner
Quadro FX4400 PCI Xpress video

Still haven't decided on video monitor yet (like the Sony 30" Flatscreen) but we'll see.

I saw a PCI Express vid card w/128 DDR ram for $250.00 CAD yesterday. Hmmm, maybe look into that Schildpad. It is the new format though so a different mobo is required. Utra fast though...

Tips: Max out your ram. Go with the fastest processor you can afford. Other than that, you got yourself a pretty good system there! Should be fun.

you've a lot of ram. 1gb is enough for most games, but when i want more i just buy extra.
why two harddisk, i'll have one of 200 gb and i split that in:
windows about 20 gb
documents 20 gb
programs 160 gb.

and i have spacxe for another harddisk

I'm getting ram maxxed out for future projects. Want to run some hardcore 64bit sound editing programs to interface with my SSL console.

I ALWAYS put Windows on a separate HDD. Partitioning it on the same drive doesn't work for me as it slows down. I put XP on HD1 and the swap file (not that I'll probably ever use it right now) on HD2. That way, if anything ever goes wrong, I still have Xp separate from all else.

The monster is currently costing me about $2600.00 CAD. Without a monitor, so add on for that. I went for the dual layer burner as well. Already have full-on sound cause it's hooked up to my studio through the SSL console, racks and then pumped through Genelec monitors. When I want, I go 'upstairs' to the 18" Martin Widows for that 1500 watt rumble but I don't do that very often as it destroys my hearing, and causes complaints from the girlfriend. About as real as you can get...

I opted to go for the new mobo though. Upgradeable for a while, with the new PCI X bus. I know that a year or so down the road something new will come along but this will do me for a while. I'm going to have a Pentium II burning ceremony when I get this up and happening...going to miss this old system...

maybe a amd athlon 64.

PCI express is great when you can make a computer with it. Now there aren't enough components with pci-express yet

$2600.00 that's too much for me
