You don't have to have any special program, just go to Multiplayer, and click on HOST, and you'r friend has to type your IP, and he has to search for the session...and join. There shouldn't be any problems... it there are, just come back here...
- To connect to a multiplayer flight you do NOT need any special hardware or software. You need, of course, an internet or lan connection. You also, duh, need Flight Simulator.
- Run flight simulator
- Select Multiplayer
- Set your mutiplayer settings (this is stuff that is your preferences...set however you want) You only need to do this once if at all.
- Choose Open Multiplayer Session
- Set the client settings. You do NOT ever need to change this unless someone tells you to change the port or you wish to change the port you serve on if you host games. Normal port (you MUST set your firewall/router to allow access to this port) is 23456.
- Input your Player Name in the space provided.
- If you wish to host, click on the host button.
- If you wish to JOIN a game, enter the ip or domain address in the address bar at the top right of the screen. After you enter it, you should see the server name/info appear in the window under your player name within a few seconds. If it takes more than a minute or so, you either did it wrong (wrong IP or address), the server isn't running or set up yet, or you or the server is behind a firewall and that must be fixed first.
- once you see the name of a game show up in the window, if you wish to join that one, just click it and choose to join or double click it to auto join.
- If you host, after clicking on the host button, you will need to enter the name of your game (anything you want), a description (not mandatory, but if you want to, fill it out), You can also make a password for your server so that people who join must know it. You set the max number of players your server will allow to connect (note, you are included in that number) and the number of people that don't fly but can just watch (spectators) if you wish to allow any.
- Host settings are again, just your local port that you are serving on. No need to ever change this unless you wish to or must because of network or firewall issues.
- then you just wait for people to join. You will see the name of the people that join in the players list.
- there is a player chat window that you can use as well to chat with people connected to your server.
If you don't know your IP, I have heard about whatsmyip.com as being able to tell you. Other users might be able to tell you how to find out by checking various things on your PC better than I can, so I will let the pro's do it.
That will tell you your IP address. Now, you MUST make sure your firewall INSIDE windows is shut off. If running XP, then you need to click on my computer. Click on My network places (left side of the window). click on View network connections (again, left side of window). open Local Area Network. click on Properties. click on Advanced tab on top. Make sure the windows xp firewall is OFF. UNCHECKED.
This firewall is a joke and is a royal pain in the *beep* to get all set up the right way. I recommend that you get (not cheap but the best one on the market) Panda Antivirus and firewall. All others suck compared to it. I have run many, and Panda is recommended by people I know that do network security for a living.
Ok, once that is off, close all that crap. If it was on, you should be ok now.
However, if you are running another type of firewall, hopefully NOT blackice or other garbage like that or Zonealarm (shudder).... then you will need to know how it works. You may need to ask your parents. They may tell you you can't turn it off...then too bad for you.
Ok...let's say you have one, they ok the setting up of flight sim. You just need to open the port. You open the firewall software. Goto the section that allows you to add programs (note, better software will ask you when you run the program accessing the firewall the first time.) You either type in the name of the program, or you find it in a normal program selection window. Once you select that you want flight sim chosen, you need to tell it what ports to open. Open 23432 through 23500. The reason for the extra ports instead of just one helps fix some problems built into flight sim software. Also, gives you some choices as to what port to use at any given time.
Ok, now that you have done that, you need to tell your firewall what type of port opening to look for. Select both UDP and TCP. Make sure if it has the option, to click on Enable.
That's that.
NOW, if your firewall is built into a router/switch, then you need to access that. There are tons, so I am not going into how to do it on every type. If you have linksys (anything else is stupid) then you just goto the web site: http://192.168.1.1 that will access your router/switch. if that addy doesn't work, change the first .1. with .0. Once there, you simply goto Advanced/forwarding (some routers are different but you are looking for the window that allows you to open ports. some call it game tab or something like that.)
You put in the name: FlightSim and then follow the above info for ports to use, types, and enable.
Now, the person connecting to you must ALSO open their outgoing port for flight sim. Same as all the above.
If you don't understand any of that, then read it again.....5 times. If you still don't, call a parent.
*** My fingers hurt now, so I am done. enjoy!
Moderators other than me, feel free to put both of my multiplayer connection info into one nice how to if you want. I am too lazy.

is it true that you have to have zone.com or something like that?
Hi all im all new to this is it only a freind you can play with or is there a proper server for fs im reli dnt know how to set it up its confusing Regards....
This is quite an old post to dig up...but I'll give you my advice on multiplayer. You can either host your own session or join another server. There are hundreds of servers to play on. To find one, you'll need a free, small program called FSHostSpy. You can get it at: http://www.chocolatesoftware.com/fshostspy/
Once you use that, you can find servers to play on. Note, though, some servers have voice chatting over a free program called TeamSpeak, and they won't let you on their FS2004 server unless you are also on TeamSpeak. You can get the TS client at www.goteamspeak.com
If you want to play with a friend, and don't want to go to all the hassle of hosting your own server, just have your friend connect to the same server as yours through the same IP and you can fly together.
