There's lots and lots of posts on every FS Forum about how to get the best framerates and performance of Flight Simulator. "Optimal Configurations" is kind of a misnomer. What's optimal for me, may not be optimal for you. But, every flight simmer should follow some easy tricks to set his or her machine up to display FS as well as possible, no matter what kind of machine they have.
Here's some that I use, and they definetly help....

1. Use Scandisk, and Defrag at least once a month.
This keeps your system running at it's best.

2. Close all unnecessary programs running in the background.
This includes Virus Scanners. Think of it as carrying allot of heavy bags of groceries, upstairs. You can't go too fast, because you're all weighed down. Lighten the load, and see the improvement.

3. Set up your Display Preferences so they are toward the upper end of the scales. Then lower them until you find a good balance between framerates and display quality.
*You will have to make some concessions*

4. Be patient. Some systems simply won't run FS well. In time, you will find the settings that fit the best.

5. **Budget Permitting**
Hardware upgrades are the best way to go. Memory, (128Mb is good for FS), Video Card, Hard Drive, Processor. It all depends on how much money your willing to part with. To be sure you're not throwing your money away, find a RELIABLE technician, and talk to him. Someone who is knowledgable about your particular system could be worth spending some time with. If he is like most I've met, they will be glad to let you pick their brains. Make use of this and get all the information you can BEFORE you go to the computer store.

Hope this helps!!

Glad to help, Gonzalo.

As you probably know, this is just scratching the surface. There's so many other things that factor into making FS run as good as possible on a particular computer. I've been a simmer since the "FS98 bug" bit me. I'm by no means an expert, but I read everything I can get my hands on about Flight Simulator, and really pay attention to the guys out there who really know their stuff. I use all of the 5 set up tips, without fail, and I've yet to have a serious problem with FS2K2 on my modest machine. Mostly just the odd, "Operator Error", once in a while.

Hopefully, if a beginner needs a tip or two, I can help them out. If I don't have the answer, I can usually point a person in the right direction.

If there's a newbie out there that needs some answers, in "PLANE" (get it?)
simple terms, please feel free to drop a note to: fisharno@hotmail.com.

Thanks, again
