I had to read your posting twice to understand what your question was. That is very funny. How can you be "below" the requested flight level and have ATC tell you to "descend" to the correct flight level>
That is almost as bad as when I am trying to descend to landing and the ATC keeps telling me to climb to the requested elevation. I am on mile from the airport and ATC is still telling me to climb to some crazy elevation. |

While I have not yet had the experience you describe, I am wondering if sometimes it is because it is not the ATC for for the airport where you are actually landing at. I will be on the lookout for the rogue ATC |

ok some more.
"Flight xxxxx[me] you are cleared to land."
I approach and touch down. not an ordinary plane, THE an225 touchs down gently. as the runway's short for the antonov, I immediately brake and hit f2 for reverse thrust.
"flight xxxx[not me] you are cleared for take-off"
and the *beep* tries to take off and kills me. ain't it nice?

It is a comon issue about ATC to make bleep-up's...about the original question, that is because your static measuring equipment still has some measurement error die to difference in air density. So ATC gets altitude from the radar, and you get it from the static system....
P.S Believe me it would be worse if you got an XXXXX, you are 0 below your assigned altitude, decend to FL180 |

| I was wondering if you were flying in a area that goes very low (negative alt) could you request a level BELOW 0? |

My ATC is really messed up. When I get to the runway and call for t/o clearance they tell me to hold short.. okay no big deal...
the plane is 12 miles out! So Im sitting there for like half an hour waiting for this guy to land.
Usually while this happens AI traffic snuggles up to the less desireable areas of my plane and waits. ...and we both wait...
Finally the 100 mile approach plane lands...and we wait... he gets handed off to ground...
and we wait...
ATC never does get back to me!
That is until I just taxi out onto the runway then they take notice and clear me for t/o, but before I can respond, the AI plane behind me is already asking for clearance and has to be told to wait..which makes me wait to reply to my clearance. GAH! it makes me so mad!
Theyve also cleared planes to take off with me.. and a few to land with me...
Once flying into Atlanta I was on this beeeeaaaautiful approach in a 737. When they cleared "Soar something or other" to land on my runway. SO I was looking in front of me for an MD-80 .. none to be seen.. then I get clared to land on the same runway. As Im replying I see 2 main gear and a tiny lil nosegear in my windshield! So were both shooting this approach together when I hear "Delta XXX go around I say go around - aknowledge" .. Im like "no way! I was here first" Besides I was right on the glide slope and the other plane was about 30 feet above. So there was no way Id go missed and let him land! So I pressed on and then they told him to go around...he aknowledged and I landed. On the rollout though..an MD-80 passed through me like a phantom on the runway.
They also have a habit of telling me about traffic that doesnt matter to me. Cruising at FL385 they call me up and say:
"Air Canada - 790 traffic is 6 'o clock 4 miles at 5000, Cessna Skyhawk report them in sight"
hmm okay, hes 4 miles away directly behind me cruising at 100 knots and Im doing mach 0.87... no conflict there.. add in for fun that hes only about 6.3 miles BELOW me.

Amen to that, Virgin. I've had the same problem many times at KATL. There's nothing more disconcerting finding yourself in a race for the runway at one of the worlds busiest airports. I must admit though, It never dawned on me to play chicken with my virtual colleague Gotta give that one a try.
Seriously though, there are a couple of thing that I found that help minimize this. One is to remove all the built-in FS9 AI. I noticed that most of the conflict seemed to be with Soar, Orbit and Pacifica and that stupid Cessna Caravan carrier (can't remember the name). The other thing that helped a lot was dropping the slider for commercial AI down to around 75%.
The ATC glitch that really annoys me, especially on long flights, is the "heavy" that never reaches altitude. Listening to ATC repeatedly tell him to climb is enough to get me to turn my speakers off until the next handoff. |

| GAH! that reminds me! I was at a small airport just east of Toronto, Oshawa to be exact, and I was operating IFR from there but there was *beep* cessna that kept calling up and asking for clearance to land. The tower kept saying the airport was IFR and his request was denied. End of story? Not by a long shot. Every 15 seconds this bozo kept calling up asking for clearance to land. GAH! I couldnt wait to get in the air and handed off just to get away from those two! |

Get this.... one time i was at my cruise altitude, dont remember what exactly so we'll use FL320 as an example. This was ATC instruction:
"You are 0 above your assigned altitude, descend and maintain "FL320"
What was THAT all about? |

| sounds as though your altimeter was set to the wrong pressure. Listen to the pressure settings they give you and set your altimeter accordingly. Just a couple of digits out and you could be heading for disaster. |

| I always make sure to keep my altimiter set correctly. Sometimes when ATC tells me to change altitude, when i select the acknowledge option, my pilot says "maintain present heading and altitude" |

| And going back to what virgin said about traffic, how is it possible to have traffic in sight at 6 o'clock? unless you either A: have TCAS, or 2: have a transparent glass airplane... |

1.Well i had 2 ai traffic files once. One full of project AI traffic and the other the default one. there was some conflict and there could be 2 of the same airplanes taxiing behind each other normally. Then when they got to cruise they stuck to gether and made one airplane that would weave in and out of each other a couple inches. THis only hapened with the default traffic so i got rid of it.
2.I also noticed that atc would tell them to climb 300 feet or so over and over but they would never do it.
3. the project ai traffic would keep its flaps down so it would climb at really low speeds to its cruise altitude then stall for 300 feet or so then climb again, and it would repeat |
