Here is some settings i saw made to the cfg file. Any comments would be appreciated. I am running a modest system Celeron 2.4, 640mb pc333 ram, ATI 9200se 128mb pci video card and 40 gig western digital hd. Performance is not so good 9-15 fps and quite choppy and bad case of the jaggies.
TERRAIN_DEFAULT_RADIUS=9.900000
TERRAIN_EXTENDED_LEVELS=3.5
TERRAIN_EXTENDED_RADIUS=9.900000
TERRAIN_ERROR_FACTOR=100.000000
TERRAIN_MIN_DEM_AREA=30.000000
TERRAIN_MAX_DEM_AREA=100.000000
TERRAIN_MAX_VERTEX_LEVEL=20
TEXTURE_BANDWIDTH_MULT=400
I have the mipmap quality inside FS2004 set to 4 and framerate lock to Unlimited.
Thanks for your comments! |

| For a start, I would suggest locking it to 17-22 fps. Although there were some fuss abou that option, I still believe that locking does improve performance. |

hey richy,
ive got a comparable system (P4-2.27/1gig pc333 ram/ATI 9600 pro 128mb AGP), so im currious of your settings and fps. I have had fs9 for well over a year and I think im finally close to the "perfect" display settings for this machine.
I can max out most setting and be fine when not near cities (25-50fps). Its taking off and landing in larger cities that brings my machine to its knees (5-7 fps). (unfortunately this is when you need the best frame rates possible for smooth landing) So I have to lower: MIP(5), lighting(4), ter. text size(medium), all weather/cloud options at 25% with MEDIUM detailed cloud coverage, scenery complexity and autogen scenery both set to dense, all to maintain 18-30fps in larger cities (seattle is where i test fps and settings-(good mix of buildings/water/terrain with 182skylane)
I went ahead and flew out of seattle: 18-25fps, slewed to 10k feet: 20-30 fps, then slewed to olympic mountains: 25-50 fps. I plugged in changes to cfg file from your post and repeated my "flight"......noticed nothing, fps were comparable and display didnt look any different. My terrain mesh setting had jumped by itslef to 100% form 85% so I think the terr. max dem area is directly linked to this setting.
I have a couple of frame rate enhancers installed (like frame/rate friendly clouds) and have uninstalled any scenery enhancements that are more complex (like detailed taxi-ways) to help.
Much debate on locking fps. Your eyes cant see anything faster than 24 fps so many lock fps close to this, but I ve heard from a couple people on various sites (that know far more than me about how fs9 runs) and they have commented that it does NOT help performance and to set slider to unlimited. My personnal view is that it doesnt do me (my eyes) any good to have fps faster than 24, so theres no harm in setting close to this and if it helps performance, GREAT, if not, no harm done.
Not much concrete info here about the cfg file changes, just my experiences and results.

Thanks for your comments w4P. I am getting a replacement motherboard and processor from Dell. We will see how much difference the p4 makes.
Have yourself a great day!
