The first Boeing 747 scheduled passenger flight took place on January 22, 1970. The aircraft assigned to this flight was the first fully certified 747 in the world. Pan American's 747-124, N735PA. However, the first JT9D's fitted to the 747 were very unreliable, and after several hours of delay, Pan American switched the flight to N736PA, "Clipper Mayflower." N736PA was renamed "Clipper Young American" for this historic flight.
At some point later, N736PA was renamed "Clipper Victor," and was assigned to fly PA1736 from Los Angeles to Las Palmas. On March 27, 1977 it was destroyed in the worlds word aviation accident to date after being diverted to Los Rodeos. KLM4805, (PH-BUF), De Rijin a boeing 747-206B, collided with N736PA on the runway killing 583 people.
The crash killed 500 to 600 + people. Sorry if any of your elders were aboard that tragic flight.
But look at what one man was able to acomplish in the industry.
Had it not been for Mr. Juan Trippe we may have be still flying trans-oceanic routes on prop jobs.
Founding a airline that even Teddy Roosevelt let slip by his "trust busting" even though it was known to be a blatent monopoly.
He forced Boeing and Douglas into the jet age, his foresight was the founding basis for the creation of the the Dash 80, later known as the 727.
This cat had some real insight into what aviation would become, and he took as much advantage of it as he could. Airplanes will crash regardless of what they are or what livery they carry. And when they go down the situation is never pretty.
