Hi all.. I would love to create my own fantasy aircraft for FS2002, is there free software available that allows you to do this without a friggin' 2 month learning curve or am I being naive hoping for freeware of this type? And if I do decide to fork out for some 3D aircraft developing software can anyone recommend the easiest to use software program. I'm great at designing wicked looking aircraft on paper but hope not to be bogged down with too deep a program if you know what I mean. I need simple but powerful. I would also hope for ease of importing said aircraft into FS9 when I upgrade. Thanks in advance for any advice or insights into the world of aircraft design.

Regardless of all claims to the contrary, there is no "easy" program for creating 3d models. They all have a good bit of study involved. Gmax and FSDS2 are primarily used. Gmax is freeware and shipped with 2k2pro and Fs9. FSDS is payware.

Yup...GS is right on the $$.

You could try a demo version of 3DS Max too if ya want. The premier modelling program out there.

Thanks folks, I'll look into these programs and try to find time for some brainwork. It must be quite satisfying to create, configure and paint a successful aircraft. I'm thinking scenery design would be fun too. Great forum, a whole new world for me, all the downloads and possibilities offered online, endless fun to be had, eh?

You cant take an aircraft FROM flight simulator and put it into Gmax and edit it. Gmax is for creating the model, which is then compiled by mkmdl.exe into the necessary format for FS to use. Once a model is compiled, it is set in stone. There is no de-compiler as of yet for for flight simulator aircraft. In order to change a model, you would have to have the source files in the format for whichever modeling software you are using.

Only problem with Wings is it doesn't support animations, scripting or material specifics. Sad

Not bad for a starter program though.
