looking for a Chicago-Midway scenery, or even Seattle, then head over to Flytampa! They have announced the next scenery to be released in the next week. The screenshots are amazing!

Just a quick question...

Would scenery as good as that really hurt your frame rates??

Scenery that is built with LOD's (level of detail) will keep your frames up and smoothe rather than a scenery that has none.
If your interested, this works by making.. lets say the control tower. You model the control tower. That is LOD model 1. To make more, and to save your frames, you build more "control tower models" within your original model, but with less detail. There-for as you move farther away from the control tower, the LOD 1 model shifts to an LOD 2 model which is slighly less detailed. Than if move even farther away, it will shift to LOD 3 which will be less detailed than the 2nd. (The number also depends on how many LOD models you build) It could be 3, or 10. Just like AI Aircraft.
This in terms, is what Flytampa has developed in their sceneries. It is very remarkable how they can build such detailed sceneries, and have the fps counter remain hardly touched.

Cool Hope this all makes sense, lol!

To further elaborate, that LOD sequence is loading one step at a time into the cache like layering a cake which is what makes it smoother on framerates, if it all loaded at once when you came into the view distance parameter then you would see the "hit" as your display momentarily hangs while the scenery loads up the cache. For example, if you are carrying a bucket and I load water into it a little at a time, you would be able to walk at a relatively unimpeded rate or speed, but if you are walking along and I drop the whole bucket load of water on you all at once it would cause you to stop momentarily while you regain your balance before carrying on. Hope this illustrates the explanations in this thread for you.

Well put GS! I just wish MS would adopt this technique a little more in the next release of FS!

Most fly tampa stuff has a demo with everything plus some blobs (KTPA has some unobtrusive orange blobs, I think there are 13 in this large airport.
