Dear God sent experts!

Here goes the story which is forever repeating itself:

I take off and I am told to climb to say 4000. I will put this into the altitude hold part of the AP and set a vertical speed. Meanwhile everything else is going fine. The aircraft climbs and levels out at 4000 as displayed. At which point I get ATC on the radio telling me to hurry up in getting to 4000, or it sometimes goes the other way and tells me that I'm too high (etc 4700) and I need to drop. There is a great deal of confusion and before long they cancel the IFR (boo hoo).

My altimeter will tell me one thing and they are telling me another. This is with me already having pressed "B" on the runway to recalibrate ground level. Oh and why does ATC say "Altimeter 2992" all the time.

I'm a pest I know but am keen to learn!

Altimeter has to be set along the way as well. Sometimes you gotta hit the B key more than you do anything else. All depends on the weather.

If your Alt is displaying 29.92 ALL THE TIME then maybe your 'B' key isn't assigned. Check your assignment settings.

No problem with the repeated questions...they are valid.

If your B key isn't working, you might have to reassign it. Sometimes you have to fly about 200 to 300 ft. higher or lower than assigned altitude to get them to shut up. Hit shift-Z and compare your altimeter to the reading on top of the screen. This will tell you wether you need to fly higher or lower. Don't go more than a 400 ft. difference or they start all over again.
